The Funniest Movies of the Decade

Why? Because They Made Me Laugh!

Craig Whyel
Here are my picks of the best movie comedies of the decade:

The Hangover 2009 Warner Brothers

This is a raucous tale of things gone wrong, thanks to the drug, roofies. The Hangover is significant because it marked a return to R-rated in US comedies, which was absent for about eight years. I especially enjoyed Ed Helms of The Office in this movie. Mike Tyson's cameo was very funny.

O Brother Where Art Thou 2000 Buena Vista

A comic redux of Homer's The Oddessy, set in the 1930s rural south, done masterfully by Joel and Ethan Coen. This features an excellent cast, the best of which, for me, was the performance by Stephen Root as Radio Station Man (The blind dude). Casting Root in any movie shows you care to hire the very best.

The 40 Year Old Virgin 2005 Universal Pictures

This movie propelled Steve Carell (who co-wrote this) into movie stardom. It also did wonders for Seth Rogen and writer director Judd Apatow.

Shaun of the Dead 2004 Focus Features

Simon Pegg was brilliant as the star and co-writer of this part romantic comedy, part zombie movie. The jokes were constant, as was the tension. I really liked co-star Nick Frost as Ed, the slob roommate turned zombie.

Wedding Crashers 2005 New Line Cinema

I typically don't care for stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn but their stellar cad-ness worked wonders in this movie.

Napolean Dynamite 2004 Fox Searchlight

Jon Heder's goofy loser Napolean was almost as touching as he was weirdly funny. Efren Ramirez, as Ed, was hilarious as the sidekick.

Superbad 2007 Sony Pictures

Jonah Hill's exhausted but hopeful portrayal was stellar. Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell (the dude with the McLovin ID) was screamingly funny. Co-writer Seth Rogen did well as one of the cops. I enjoyed this movie despite my dislike of co-star Michael Cera.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy 2004 Dreamworks

Will Ferrell's over-the-top portrayal of a 1970's era news anchor was helped by the excellent supporting cast, which included Christina Applegate, Fred Willard, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner.

Trailer Park Boys: The Movie 2006 Dreamworks SKG

The Trailer Park Boys is a wildly successful comedy out of Canada that is a mockumentary style show about three foul mouthed pot heads. This movie introduced the guys to American audiences and did not disappoint. My favorite was goggle glasses wearing Bubbles, played by Mike Smith (a well-known Canadian musician).

Kenny 2006 Madman Entertainment

This movie is an obscure gem from Australia. Shane Jacobson stars as Kenny, a porta-toilet deliveryman. It was done so well in mockumentary style that many viewers initially thought they were watching an actualdocumentary. I added this to my list because it is a wonderful movie that got too little attention in the US but did well in the rest of the world. Shane Jacobson was masterful as Kenny. This is available in the US at many DVD rental outlets.
