I was a teenager living in New York City. My boyfriend, Rick, and I were invited to a Halloween party and we decided that we should go as Sonny and Cher.
This funny Halloween story began as Rick arrived at my apartment so we could both get into our Sonny and Cher costumes. We both wore bell bottom jeans, t-shirts and suede vests. My mother helped me attach huge false eyelashes with eyelash glue. She pinned up my hair, and attached my Halloween wig. The very long straight black hair of the wig was just the thing to complete my Cher costume.
Little did we know that later on that night my Halloween wig would provide a funny Halloween story for years to come.
The party was in a basement adorned with decorations. A teenage band was playing rock and roll music, and when they saw "Sonny and Cher" were there, they began playing "I Got You Babe." Rick and I had a great time. But my Halloween wig was becoming a nuisance. It was constantly falling forward and I kept pushing it back into place. After a few hours of partying, my Halloween wig was becoming less and less secure on my head.
When the party was over, we rode the Lexington Avenue subway back home to my apartment, riding in the last car like we always did.
As this funny Halloween story continued, the subway arrived at our station, 68th street, and the subway doors opened. As we stepped through the doors onto the platform, my Halloween wig fell forward, so I pushed it back. But this time my Halloween wig dislodged itself and fell to the ground behind me, landing halfway in the subway car and halfway on the platform. Before I could retrieve it, the doors closed, with my Halloween wig incredibly caught in the doors! The train started moving, and we watched in horror as my Halloween wig, held tightly by the doors, bounced up and down and back and forth in time with the moving subway. While the rest of the passengers on the platform completely ignored it, we laughed uncontrollably as we watched my Halloween wig travel through the entire length of the subway station and into the darkness of the tunnel ahead.
That was the end of my Halloween wig, and the end of this funny Halloween story.
I never saw my Halloween wig again. I can only guess that subway passengers took no notice of it, trampling it as they entered and exited the subway car, and that my Halloween wig traveled all the way to the end of the line in Brooklyn!
My Halloween wig probably has its own funny Halloween story to tell.
