want a Porsche! Who
in the automotive world
does not want one?
Although the entry level
Porsche Boxster is the
least expensive Porsche,
it remains out of reach
for many drivers.
In 2014, Porsche will
offer a 'baby' Boxster.
The car is likely in re-
sponse to sports cars
such as the upcoming Toyota/Subaru all-wheel drive sports car due to be
released soon. As the Japanese car will have a base price of about $20,000
and it will provide Boxster matching or beating performance, Porsche needs
to counter with the smaller less expensive Boxster.
The baby Boxster will use Porche's adaptation of VW's mid-engine
platform that was previewed on the BlueSport concept seen at the
Detroit auto show. The smaller Boxster will measure 157.5 inches in
length and have a 95.7-inch wheelbase. It will have an aluminum hood
and doors to keep the weight down below 2700 pounds. The car's platform
will have struts at all four corners.
The engine will be a 2.0-liter flat four turbo making about 300 hp or
to cut production costs, a 2.0-liter inline four cylinder turbo. It will
have a six-speed manual gearbox or a duel-clutch seven-speed
transmission as an option.
To further reduce costs, the interior will likely consist of VW
components. Considering VW's excellent fit and finish, the interior
should hit the mark.
Some enthusiasts might object and ask if the baby Boxster is a 'real
Porsche.' However, such has happened in the past with the Porsche
914 and 924 (both cars were joint efforts by Volkswagen and Porsche).
And now that VW controls Porsche, some component sharing is inevitable
(the future mid-engined VW Beetle will likely have a variation of the
entry level Boxster engine), especially to compete against future offerings
from Japan.
Expect the baby Porsche Boxster to be priced starting at about $30,000.
Maybe a Porsche is in our future!
