The Gay Marriage Debate, Love Vs. Hate

Vonda Menard
The most common argument against legalizing gay marriage is it will lead o the downfall of the institution of marriage and somehow cheapen it. This is the same institution with a failure rate of greater than 50%. During a time when the number of children being born out o wedlock, and stories of unhappy, desperate housewives and feed-up sex starved husbands are commonplace, homosexuals may represent the largest population of pro marriage supporters. Those opposed should take heart; over half of these marriages may also end in divorce.

The religious proponents are quick to state how immoral and sinful homosexuality is, all while standing in judgment of the children of God. We are all children of God and like the relatives we'd rather not see, but are forced to at family gatherings, we should practice tolerance. For one group of people to deny the right of another group to love consenting adults is fundamentally wrong. It is acceptable to be of the opinion that homosexuals are doomed and their future includes, fire and a red demon with horns and a pointy tail. What is not acceptable is to do the work of God and judge others, especially if you are coming from a religious position.

Homosexuals are taxpayers, people who contribute to society. What happens in their lives should be their business, as long as they are not hurting others. People fear a world in which men are making out in public, an often-used point in debates. Strangely, the site of two women making out isn't as disturbing. Making gay marriage legal won't open the floodgates and create a modern day Saddam and Gomorrah. Let's face it we all know married people have less sex then any other population.

The economy is in a critical state, unemployment is on the rise, the housing market is still crumbling, global warming will be a permanent problem, and the United States is currently fighting two wars. I haven't mentioned health care problems, world hunger, child abuse, and countless other issues that seem far more pressing to me. We are expending a great deal of resources debating the right of people to love each other. Aren't there more damaging issue?

If an African American male can become President (he's technically only half African American, but we'll take it) of the United States, maybe one day same sex couples will have the rights other citizens of the world now enjoy.
