The Gay Vote and Midterm Elections

Etienne J. Sarfelli
I read a news headline that stated that some "gays" were planning to vote Republican during the midterm elections because they were angry with Barack Obama. I guess they are angry for his failure to come through (yet) on a promise. But as with all members of the interest groups that President Obama promised to treat with respect, dignity, and/or due diligence, if gay and lesbian voters think that Obama did not follow through on a promise, they would be misguided to think they would ever get anything from a Republican. Voting republican would only cut off their noses to spite their faces, so to speak, because Obama has more than likely tried (and will continue to try) to keep his word, and republicans are probably doing whatever they can to stand in his way.

In 2008, many Republicans broke party lines by voting for Obama. There are two plausible reasons for this. The first is that they realized they didn't have a candidate on the ballot worthy of taking office. The second reason is that they knew they could use Obama as a scapegoat for all of the nonsense George W. Bush caused for the previous eight years. Since Obama's win, members of congress and these "well intentioned" people at large have done nothing to support his efforts, even in instances when it would have served them well. However, even with very little bipartisan support, Barack Obama has kept many of his promises and continues to fight for the rest. These disgruntled people can certainly vote for anyone they choose on Election Day next week, but the only results they will see from voting for the opposing party is more of their desires denied. Furthermore, it will give the republicans exactly what they want.
