This used to happen to me all the time. Might be a six figure income writer by now, if only I could remember those six figure ideas. I decided that this had to stop. I went to Wal-Mart and for about $15.00 purchased the GE model no. 3-5377A micro cassette recorder. This is probably the best piece of equipment I have bought in years. Features include;
Normal or half speed recording
Jack for stereo headphones
External and internal microphone
Built in speaker
AVR or Automatic Voice Recording
Hi and low microphone settings
And much more!
The AVR feature is one of the best to use while working. This feature allows you to set the machine to record and leave it. It will start recording at the sound of your voice. This is wonderful for hands free use. Suppose you are working on that current article, suddenly you have an idea for another article. It is not necessary to stop what you're doing and press the button to record your thoughts; all you have to do is speak. The only drawback to this feature is that it is a little slow to respond. This may cause the first word spoken to be cut off. However, I have a very scientific way to solve this problem, simply say "record" or "thought" before going on to state your idea. This will give the machine time to respond before you go on.
Another very useful feature is the half speed recording; this allows you to get more information on one tape. Just make sure that the playback speed is set the same or else you will sound like a chipmunk on the playback.
Finally I would also like to point out the hi-low microphone feature. This is used when doing different kinds of recording. If you are using it for dictation then the low setting is sufficient, this allows for a lower background noise level upon playback. However, if you are at a meeting, or perhaps a convention in which you would like to record what's going on; then you would switch the microphone to the hi level. This will allow you to record voices from further away; however there is a bit more background noise.
In closing, this is a must have for anyone who is or wants to become a writer. It is small and easy to carry; it will fit in your pocket, and runs on two AA batteries. There is also a jack for an AC adapter. You can't beat this device, and for less than $20, it's truly priceless.

Post a CommentThank you for your posting it was helpful. I have an old Model No. 3-5378ABG that needs repair. The unit's playback is no longer audible and has a loud screetching noise. I was looking for the GE website where I get some information on repair when I found you. After reading your posting I am thinking I should just buy a new recorder since the price is so economical ($15.00.) I paid over $60.00 for my recorder many years ago. I like you, have really appreciated its quality features and durability all these years. A year ago I made the mistake of purchasing a digital recordering device. Everytime I tried to play back a recording I either recorded over my work or erased it. Good luck to you and thanks for your posting. Merry Christmas to you and yours. sj
