The Georgian Terrace Hotel "The Grande Dame" of Atlanta's Famous Peachtree Street

If you have ever read any other reviews I've written on hotels you'll see that I usually prefer to stay at a Marriott. Sometimes, it's just not convenient and I have to take my chances staying at a hotel I'm not familiar with. Very recently was one of those times. I needed to travel to Atlanta for a business trip and the most convenient hotel to the location of the meeting was the Georgian Terrace Hotel. This hotel is right across from the historic Fox Theater and if you do some research you'll see that this hotel hosted the world premier reception for Gone With the Wind in 1939!!

Checking In

I was immediately greeted by several bellmen when I walked up to the entrance. It's a beautiful and very elegant lobby. Check-in is at 3:00 pm and check out is at noon. Service was good and check-in was very quick

Room 802

This hotel appears to have been (and I may be wrong) a very old apartment building. I had expected to find a New York City type of cramped hotel room but what I found was what felt like walking into an old apartment of my grandmother from many years ago. The furniture was kind of beat up but was very comfortable. A full size sofa with a table, lamp and phone. To the right was a full size kitchen and appliances but no dishes, pots, or pans. The hotel guide in the room states that the hotel will supply china, silverware, and cookware if needed. In front of the couch was a table

I have to say without any reservation (no pun intended) that the bed in this hotel is by far the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in!

In front of the couch was a table which I had to use for a desk for the laptop, and a dresser that held the small TV and several large dresser drawers.

The carpet looked fairly new and draperies looked like something I'd find in an old grandparent's house.

When I was a really young kid back in the late 50's and early 60's I remember going into my grandmother's house in the Bronx in New York. This bathroom reminded me of that bathroom with the old wallpaper and medicine cabinet. The hotel supplies some scented soaps, shampoo, body wash, and lotion. A hairdryer was in the cabinet below the sink. Shower pressure was low but not awful.

The key to this room was the mattress. It was one of those memory foam mattresses. I have never slept in a mattress, even at home, that was this comfortable! Even the pillows were incredibly soft and comfortable.

There was a bedroom closet, but not enough hangers. I can't understand that unless guests have walked away with them

There is a health club. But had I wanted to it's located on the roof top level. The hotel guide in the room says that there are three treadmills, three bikes and four stair climbers in a cardio theater. There are also weight machines. They indicated that, in season, there is a junior size swimming pool, sun deck, locker rooms with showers and dressing areas. Pretty impressive!

TV, Phones, Intertnet, etc.
TV channel selection is awful. They didn't even have HBO which I found hard to believe. But wired high speed internet is included in cost of the room. They supply the Ethernet cord in the closet. The lobby has free wireless.

Local phone calls are $1.00 and other than telling you that long distance charges apply there's no indication what the hotel up charge is, which I think is unfair. But these days, most people use their cell phones anyway.

The hotel does have a restaurant but the prices like most hotel restaurants were pretty steep. Room service is offered as well. For room service, 8% sales tax, 20% gratuity, and $3.00 delivery fee are included. YIKES!!! No different than other hotels but with already high prices, that really hikes up your dinner cost.

Complaints?
There are little things but it won't detract from my rating on the hotel. The clock radio is very cheap and I had a heck of time getting the alarm set. Pushing the 'hour' button just didn't work very well. It took time, but I eventually got it. The bathroom faucet had a leak. I let them know at the front desk and evidently they sent someone up to tighten it up a bit, but it still was leaking. It needs a new washer.

The hotel has internet service but there's no real desk to work on, just a very high coffee table which is too high to comfortably work on the laptop.

Transportation to the Hotel
I didn't drive here or rent a car. I took a plane to Atlanta airport and hopped the MARTA train right at the airport for about $2. It dropped me off less than a block from the hotel! Very convenient. The hotel does offer valet parking.

Final Thoughts
What I look for in a hotel is a very comfortable bed, quiet (no noise from other guests), friendly service, and room to spread out and work. This hotel has all that plus the knowledge that I'm staying at someplace that's got a lot of history behind it!

I highly recommend it! This hotel also has two and three bedroom suites as well. It's a terrific place to stay and I slept so well on that foam mattress!
