The Ghost at Sallisaw Creek

Sena Slaughter
This is a true account of something my family endured while living in the country in Sallisaw, OK.

In the year 2000, we bought a home and acreage on the outskirts of Sallisaw, OK. There were two ways to get to our house. One was a route that led us across a part of Sallisaw Creek; the other was further up the main road a ways.

We almost always took the road by the creek. One day while at work, my husband and I heard that someone had been shot, and killed on the bridge there by the creek, and that the perpetrators had chased some men from the electric company into the woods, and was shooting at them. They had used their radios to call for help.

Before the Sherriff arrived, the men threw the body into the back of a pickup truck, and sped away. They were never caught. Other things happened there, unexplained deaths, or shootings over the next few years.

As we sometimes walked down that road, or rode our horses there, we noticed it always had a creepy kind of feel to it. It was different than anywhere else around that area, and I was really drawn to it in a way. I was curious about the place, why so much death seemed to occur there.

My family is very sensitive to spiritual things, both good and evil. That place had an evilness that was beyond any I had ever experienced before, but I did not get completely taken into it until my son had his own experience there.

While driving home from work at around One A.M. in the morning, he came out of the curve, right before the bridge, and there in front of him, an old woman stood. Before he could react, he hit her. He got out of the car and went to see about her, but there was nothing there.

Freaked out, he got back into the car. He felt a really creepy feeling, but chose to ignore it, and began to drive home. When he looked into his rear view mirror, the woman he had hit was sitting in his back seat.

He about had a coronary on the spot. He punched his accelerator down, and hurried home as quickly as possible, avoiding looking in the rearview mirror or the back seat at all.

Once he was home, he came and woke me, to tell me about the incident. We both went out, and looked over his car, inside, and out, nothing was there.

Over the period of the next few months, our house became inexplicably haunted. My theory was that the ghost had hitched a ride home with my son. The problem was we didn't know how to make her leave our home.

I could never see her, just feel the presence of evil, and I could see the things she did. She threw my dishes on the floor once, and she would come, and sit, or lie on my bed. We could see the actual indentation of it.

One evening, unbeknownst to me, my son was talking to a friend of his at work about the things that were going on at our house. He told him the entire story. The man, being a Christian, asked my son if he wanted to pray about it. My son agreed, and so they began to pray.

Meanwhile, during the very time of their prayer, that thing started throwing a fit in my house. Pictures, silverware, everything, was being thrown around. It was so bad, I had to leave, and go outside.

I went, and sat on a lawn chair, and my three cats were lying on the porch, seemingly content. All of a sudden they all stood, and arched their backs, hissed, and the two fully grown cats took off into the woods. My other half grown cat stood there rigidly for a moment, then, her eyes narrowed onto me.

She leapt off the porch, and came at a run to where I was sitting. When she reached me, she began to try to claw her way up my legs. She started gnawing at me in a weird way with her teeth. This was a cat I had raised from a kitten. She had always been a very sweet, loving cat; this behavior from her was bizarre.

I felt my hackles go up, and all the hairs on my arms stood straight up. I kept throwing her off of me, but she kept coming back. It was like something out of a Stephen King novel!

I got up, and went back into the house. It was quiet in there, and strangely there was nothing out of place. The pictures were all on the wall, the silverware in the dish drainer. It was as if nothing had happened in there at all.

I could hear my cat, her name was Callie, she was clawing at the side of the house, the windows, her yowl was very un-natural and it was spooking me. I was the only one home at the time.

Finally, my son came home, and he noticed that Callie was acting strangely. He said she tried to claw him, and bite him when he came up the steps to the house. He literally had to battle her off of him.

Now we both could hear her carrying on, and I knew I wasn't crazy. I told him all about what happened, and we figured out that it was the exact time his friend had prayed with him. It must have made the ghost angry, and it had somehow possessed my cat in the process.

Over the next few days, that cat didn't eat, or drink, she continued her vigil to get into the house, day and night. Finally, my youngest daughter came to me, begging me to get rid of Callie. She was really creepy, not at all like a cat anymore.

My son had an idea to take her to the Sallisaw creek bridge, and let her out there. He thought that maybe the spirit would leave her, and we could bring her back home.

We did that, and took food down for her to eat every day. She never was interested in the food, though she was losing weight terribly fast. I screamed at the spirit to leave my cat, but it was in vain.

On the fourth day, as I was driving down there, Callie ran under my cars wheels before I could hit my brakes, and she was killed. I was very upset that I had killed my own cat. I got out of the car, and demanded that thing to leave my family alone.

At that moment, I heard the creepiest wailing from down in the trees by the creek. My hair all stood on end, and I got into my car uneasily. I took Callie home to bury her.

Later that week, as my son was coming home from work, he saw the old woman standing by the bridge, looking into the rushing water of the creek below. As he drove by, she turned, and watched him. From that moment on, from time to time, we have either seen unexplainable things there, or felt the evil presence of something supernatural.

  • animals can be possessed just like humans.
  • entities can follow you home, even if you don't want them to.
  • evil spirits do exist, and can affect our physical world.
We almost always took the road by the creek. One day while at work, my husband and I heard that someone had been shot, and killed on the bridge there by the creek.
