The Ghost of the Wailing Lady

Carmella Mae Dunkin
It was a beautiful spring day in 1887, Sara and Charles were about to be wed. Sara and Charles were so in love, that it flowed over to everyone in the small town of Florrisant, Colorado. Whenever the two were together, there was a great feeling that filled the air. It was not unheard of to hear someone say, "Sara and Charles are so in love, if one of them were to die, they would both die". This was because although they were two people, they were such a part of the other, that they were really one. To see the two together made you smile with joy.

The wedding was in a small church. The church was beautiful! Full of beautiful flowers, and everyone from town was seated in the pews, as the beautiful bride Sara began down the isles to her handsome groom, Charles. They were both so very beautiful. Her in her wonderful white wedding gown that flowed like a running stream down her waist, into a long train that trailed behind her. She was the poster girl for "awesome" today. Charles was no exception to "awesome" himself. Dressed in a wonderful tux with a great tail, top hat, and white gloves and cane, he was simply dashing!

The wedding was absolutely wonderful! No one had ever been to a more beautiful wedding in all their lives. The reception afterwards was so much fun, then came time for the happy couple to head out for their honeymoon. This was the moment they both had been waiting for, their wedding night and honeymoon! They had a wonderful honeymoon planned. Not your normal honeymoon, but it was what they wanted.

Growing up in the mountains of Colorado had given both Sara and Charles a desire and dream to one day own their own gold mine. As a wedding gift, the towns folk pitched together to give Sara and Charles their dream, their own mining claim, on 160 acres of land, with a beautiful log cabin for them to live in, just outside of Cripple Creek! Sara and Charles decided instead of going away for their honeymoon, they wanted to go to their claim and start mining for their honeymoon. So that is exactly what they did.

It took them two days to make the journey to Cripple Creek, but they were taking their time since it was after all their honeymoon. The bunked down in a beautiful valley the first night. The second night they spent on a ledge that over looks the city of Cripple Creek. It was absolutely spectacular and very romantic! This was the night the couples very beautiful daughter was conceived. That night was one that Sara would remember and cherish for the rest of her life.

When morning came, you could see the glow just beaming from Sara's face, so much so, that Charles even made the comment that there was a "glow" about her that morning that he had never seen before. The two had a wonderful breakfast with coffee, then packed up their gear, hitched up the horses and headed down into the town of Cripple Creek, Colorado. Since their property was on the side of Cripple Creek, they had to travel through the town itself to get to their property. This took the two about two hours, as they decided to go sight seeing as they passed through. They enjoyed their time and stopped in the local mercantile for supplies before heading on to their cabin and claim. They both met the owners, a fine Christian couple, who also recently had married and purchased the mercantile. The four promised to get together for dinner in the future, then Sara and Charles continued to their home.

It was a short jot from the mercantile, to the couples new home and they were there in no time. This was Sara's first time seeing their new home and she was in absolute awe, when they pulled up to the front door. Charles jumped from the wagon and ran around to greet Sara before she could get down herself. He grabbed her in his arms, kissing her ever so gently, as he carried her to the door and into the cabin. They spent the day together, just loving one another and thanking God for all He had blessed them with.

The next day was the big day they had been waiting for, it was the first day of going down into the mine and beginning mining. The couple was so happy and excited and they were eager to start digging up those wonderful gold nuggets. That is when the unspeakable happened. As Charles was bringing up the elevator and getting it ready for the two of them to go down into the shaft, he lost his footing in the loose dirt and fell into the mine shaft to his death!

Sara pulled the elevator up as fast as she could, but there was no hope, Charles had broken his neck! Sara had no idea what to do, their families were at least a day away, how was she going to get word to them, how was she going to go on without Charles, the only friend she had, the only love she'd ever known. He was her life, a part of her very being. As all of these thoughts flooded her mind, she began to panic and started hearing a noise come from deep inside her.

Sara was so broken hearted over Charles death, that she let out the most bone chilling wail that was so loud and for so long, that it was heard by many in the city of Cripple Creek! The couple from the mercantile volunteered to go see what the sound was since it came from the area of where Sara and Charles had told them was where their mine and cabin was located.

Sara never left their home, she birthed their beautiful daughter there and raised her into a fine young woman, who married and brought many grandchildren into the world for Sara to love. They all gave her great joy, but there was always an empty spot in Sara that could never be filled and no matter how hard she tried, she was never able to let go of Charles memory. She was so broken hearted over his death, that she lived on that claim till the day of her death. She could be heard on every anniversary of Charles death, wailing at the mine. You can hear Sara's cry's wailing across the town of Cripple Creek, mourning the loss of Charles, the love of her life to this very day!

* This story is entirely made up, any similarities in the story to a real couple, or a real mine, is purely coincidental. Florrisant and Cripple Creek, Colorado do exist, as do many, many, gold mines in that area, however, everything and everyone else came out of the authors imagination. *

Great story, heartbreaking. Reminds me of "Cold Mountain". - I like your second idea too.

I actuallyy had a really hard time with this story. After I started it, I didn't want Charles to have to die. I think I am going to write another story similar to this one, but without Charles dieing. More of a continuing saga type story that centers around a young couple in the mountains, back during the gold rush days.
