What is your one most prized possession? Is it your boat or your house? How about your new car? What about your family, or your wife or husband? What do you treasure above all else? Your children? If any of us really thought about it I think most of us would zero in on our life. Without our life we have none of those other things. Without life we simply are not, we have nothing!
The life our Lord has given us is indeed a bountiful treasure to be coveted and protected. We know our lives will come to an end one day but for now we need to make the most of it. We know we cannot escape sin; the Bible reminds us of our plight;
Romans 3:23; "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
All of us have sinned and we wither before God's glory. We know, because we are sinners, try as we may, we know, we must pay the ultimate price;
Romans 6:23; "For the wages of sin is death;"
All of us will die. The Lord will take us all at our given time. We have seen others go, we have mourned at their leaving. They have gone and left us behind. What do they have and what will we have? What is there for the believing soul who knows he is a sinner and accepts the fact that he must die for his sins? There is the promise of eternal life.
Romans 6:23; "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
My heart fairly leaps when I digest those words. Yes, I'm a sinner. I can't help it. I try but I can never be perfectly Christ like. I want to be, but I am weak. So I know what my wages will be; I will die. But then the Bible gives me a promise to cling to;
John 3:16; "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life"
I am promised eternal life, if I just believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. That is all I have to do. It is so easy. All I need do is to believe in the one most spectacular being the world has ever known and I get the most wonderful promise ever made. I get my one most valued possession forever and ever; eternal life.
I am a sinner, we are all sinners, it is our nature. We are given the power of reason and a free will. Sometimes we use them both incorrectly. The result is sin. We must pay the price; death. The promise we have been given though is, regardless of our sinful nature, we can boast eternal life. We need only believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
I have settled an inner conflict and have come to the conclusion that what I believe is true, so I no longer "hope" for eternal life, I "know" eternal life awaits for me. I know it is there and I have faith in the Lord's promise. I have no question whatsoever that Jesus Christ is real and fully intends on coming through with his end of the bargain. I will believe in him and I will trust him. I know he is there and I know he will reward me generously.
He tells us just as clear as can be;
John 14:6; I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
How much simpler can it be? His words are relevant to the promise we have been given. Do you want eternal life? Would you like to live on forever and have the opportunity to share the world of our Lord with him, and to sit with him at his table? Then there is only one thing you must do for the promise;
John 6:47; "He who believes in Me, has everlasting life."
There it is. These are some of the most soothing and comforting words to my heart. I believe in him, therefore I will collect on his promise; everlasting life!
