The Gift of Housewarming Curtains

Sara Ann Barket
More than 10 years ago my mother handmade these kitchen curtains for my aunt and uncle as a housewarming gift. I can't recall her ever using them but the fabric was white and flowery; a kind of pattern I'd say was hideous now but maybe not as much back then.

About 10 or more years after that gift was given, we got the normal "Christmas Present Box" we recieve every year from my aunt, uncle and little cousins. In the box, they usually have a present for each of us: me, my sister, my brother, my mother and my father. But this particular year, we recieve a present addressed to the entire family. Keep in mind this was our first christmas in our newly built house.

As we tore the wrapping paper that showed the fabric of the curtains my mother had made those 10+ years before, my younger sister cried out, "Mom, what the heck is this?"

My mother gave out her I-Can't-Believe-This kind of laugh and told us all about how she made those curtains for our aunt and uncle years ago.

Needless to say, the curtains quickly saw the trash can!
