The Gift of Life

Dawn Bradney
Do you ever wonder when you donate blood, who you help in the end?

Well in my case I was the one that someone helped. I was born in the year 1974. I was born with a rare condition called an RH Factor baby. What all that means is that when I was born my blood was killing me, well I should say my blood was killing me long before I was born.

You see my parent really should of never had kids together because their blood types did not work well together. My Fathers had O+ and mother A-. They said that when my brother was born he left a trace of his blood A+ and it caused my mother to form antibodies to that type of blood and it slowly would kill anything that had that type.

On the day I was born the doctor's and nurses had to find somebody, with A+ to donate their blood to save my life. I guess they searched the hospital until they found this young teenage boy who agreed to donate his blood. I was only a little thing lying in a hospital bassinet and here was this boy, that know body knew and he was saving my parents little girl. They said that if my mother wouldn't of had me that day I would not be here now.

I have often wondered what this boy must of felt like, lying there giving his blood to this little baby girl. No one really knows when they give blood how it can change lives forever. I think back to that day and how if he had not given me his blood, then I would no longer be here and my three children would not be here either.

So the next time you think about giving blood, remember this. It is not just the gift of your blood that saves someone's life, it is the lives of their future children that your are saving also. I wish I could meet this boy, that gave of himself, to thank him for giving me the most important gift LIFE. I know that my parents are the ones that gave me life but this mystery boy really truly gave me my future. If I could say one thing to him it would be "Thank you for giving a part of you to save a little baby and my beautiful children."

Please remember give blood! It could change someone's life forever.
