This gift of writing comes in many forms. It all begins with the ability to hold a pen or pencil in one's hand. Some people are disabled and cannot do what many of us take for granted. Often it is not until you lose that ability that you become aware of how precious it really is. Those of us who are able to use a keyboard and type our thoughts or work are blessed, in most cases we can afford a computer and are able to see the words we key in on our monitors. Little things we over-look in life are sometimes more valuable than we realize.
Writing is a means of communicating that can be used in so many ways, we can share information with others or simply let our emotions flow. The old pen and paper has not lost its place in the writing world, it is still used by many people everyday; I have dozens of notebooks with everything from poems to screen plays scribbled in them. Although, typing is definitely a preference because it is quick and convenient I don't think a computer will ever replace my notepads and writing tools. My ink pens run out of ink pretty quickly, and if I saved the shaving from my pencils I'd have buckets of it.
The Power of Writing
One health benefit of writing that is gaining recognition is using the written word as a form of self-help or therapy. This is powerful, writing can be used to release inner conflicts. It can be a private experience or shared. The idea is to get your thoughts and feelings out of you and onto the paper or computer screen. This is a safe way open up and let go of buried feelings because you can express any emotion you like without reservation. Reading those words later gives you insight about yourself and life. It can allow you to see things from a different perspective, and open the door to healing on a deep level.
Writing has helped many individuals, myself included, over-come their past and move on to a happier future. It can give you a sense of inner peace. A great writing exercise is free writing.
Creativity and Writing
Many writers enjoy using words to create poetry, write lyrics for songs, share their knowledge or recipes, and to get that story in their head out. We write to express and share nearly everything under the sun. It is important to understand that one's ability to write grammatically correct should never be condemned because that could discourage a person. Anyone can learn the rules and improve on their writing style. What is most important is the gift of writing in and of itself, we should encourage and appreciate the messages that writing can convey. It is at its core a form of self-expression that began many moons ago.
If you need help or would like to improve your grammar or writing skills, visit a site dedicated to Dr. Charles Darling it is full of grammar and writing help with quizzes.
In conclusion, let me say that I appreciate reading all types of writing from technical to the comics in the Sunday paper because it is an art form that is precious. Writing is a gift, whether you are the author or reader.
