The Gift: Wurtzelbrot

Robert O. Adair
How clearly I remember,

'twas in the bleak December

In the garret where I lived 'cause I was poor.

I was nodding, nearly napping,

when I heard someone rapping,

rapping oh so loudly on my garret door.

Jumping to my feet, my very fleet feet,

if I may say so, I strode across the room,

and threw the portal wide,

and to my amazement, sitting in the gloom,

a scrumptious loaf of German bread,

the kind that's known as Wurtzelbrot

but as for the one kind enough

to succor this starving poet, I saw him not!

This Wurtzelbrot, this seasoned bread,

it most truly was a treasure!

To fill my starving stomach thus,

Such incomparable pleasure!

Why was this unexpected Yuletide treat

which contains the word for "season",

so generously bestowed you ask?

Christmas is the reason.
