The Global Product Niche

More Companies Put Stock in the Global Aspect of Selling a Product

Joe Grobin
People want more culture and character when it comes to the products they buy. Sure, we like domestic trends, but to be able to purchase something from another country (or at least looks like it's from another country) is a bit of a novelty. We like these things because they seem different.

Target caught wind of this fact relatively quickly and annually offers its Global Bazaar line on a seasonal basis. The 2007 collection has more than 1,000 items from about 22 countries. Three hundred of these products are handmade and come from countries such as Italy, Thailand or Bangkok.

The line features a lot of great throw pillows for around under $20. Some of the designs are not that much different from what you can find at other stores. However, some of the floral and silk fabrics are neat and can be used in both spring and winter home designs.

In addition to textiles, the Target Global Bazaar product line also features furniture. There are items like a seven-drawer mahogany cabinet for about $130 as well as chairs and ottomans. A lot of the furniture looks like things you might find at an Ikea or some trendy furniture store - only the prices are a little cheaper than boutiques.

You may kind of have to look around since some of the pricing can seem a little high for what you are paying for (even if it is from another country or is handmade). Your best bet is to shop online since the merchandise tends to vary by store. The Target website obviously will have more and often features sale prices you wouldn't normally find in the store.

Another company that has caught on to the global product craze is Cost Plus, which is a similar version of the Global Bazaar only it was around first and is a whole store devoted to novelty imports.

Cost Plus's inventory is pretty unique and tends to vary all the time. The stores usually have a great selection of throw pillows and throw blankets. A chenille throw can be had for under $20. In addition to that, the store also carries some furniture such as dining room and bedroom sets.

In addition to all of this, Cost Plus stores carry imported wines, pastas and other types of foods. A really good time to visit a Cost Plus store is during the holidays because they have a good selection of ornaments. Plus you can shop there yearround for unique gifts to give.

Pricing can be kind of steep. However, if you keep you eyes peeled on the Sunday advertisements, you can usually find things at fair prices.

Pier 1 Imports is similarly high priced, but maybe even more so. Their selection is trendy, but they don't really seem as unique as Cost Plus or Target's Global Bazaar line. You can find some things at Pier 1, but you just have to look.

All of these sources are great to remember if you are looking for something unique for your home or for a gift to someone else.

  • Target's Global Bazaar product line is now out in stores
  • The line features more than 1,000 items imported from other countries
  • Cost Plus is another retailer that sells imports
