The Gold Eagle Inn of Brookville, Pennsylvania

A Restaurant Review

Pam Freer
If you're looking for fine dining in western Pennsylvania, the Gold Eagle in Brookville is the place for you. The Gold Eagle is located just off Interstate 80 (exit 78) near the intersections of routes 28, 322, and 36.

Besides the delicious meal, your eyes are also in for a real treat. The Gold Eagle is actually built from three antique barns put together to make one very interesting building. There are several rooms to wander around in. If you stop to look at everything, you'll be sure to work up quite an appetite! The Main Dining Room boasts a hand cut stone fireplace, and a myriad of tools and trinkets from pioneer days. The Bell Room is packed to the brim with ...bells! From small to very large, these antique bells will surely capture your interest. Last but not least and, reminiscent of the bootlegging days, is the Still Room. Whisky stills and apple presses fill this room with nostalgia, and the liquor bottles from days gone by are a sight to behold.

The service and the food at the Gold Eagle are excellent. After you receive your drinks, a waitress will bring a relish tray for you to enjoy, and you will be offered sorbet between courses to cleanse your pallet. The waitress also brings a small loaf of bread and honey butter to complement your meal. The menu ranges from fairly common foods to the more exotic. There's definitely something for everyone. The prices at the Gold Eagle are very affordable, with main entrees varying between $9.95 and $26.95. Honestly, with the charming atmosphere and the quality of service and food, you would expect to pay much more than you do.

The menu is also friendly to those of us who adhere to special diets. The Mushroom Ravioli is a delicious and perfect choice for the vegetarian, and the Steak and Shrimp Kabobs are an excellent choice for the carb conscious. If you are adventurous, you might want to try some of the interesting appetizers. Besides the more common deep fried vegetables, you can order Oysters Rockefeller, Calamari, Escargot, or Bourbon Beef Skewers with Tobacco Onions.

The Gold Eagle also offers AAA lodging, with on-line booking available. Resorts in the area include Clear Creek State Park, Cook's Forest State Park, Cool Spring Power Museum, and the Pinecrest Country Club.

Whether you live in the area, or you are traveling through western Pennsylvania via Interstate 80, the Gold Eagle is a great place to dine. Take time to relax and enjoy the surroundings ...and the fabulous meal!
