The Golden Compass : Mixed Reviews

Erika Gilliam-Long
The Golden Compass is a new fantasy movie that is just released out to the public. For this movie to be new, it has created quite the controversy. The running time for the movie is one hundred and thirteen minutes. It is rated PG-13 for some sequences of fantasy violence. The first book that the movie is based after is called Northern Lights in the UK. Pullman decided that the entire series would be called The Golden Compasses. But when it was discussed in the US the publishers insisted on calling it The Golden Compass.

The movie has created controversy because of the way that the books are written. In an interview with the creator he said that his books were about killing God. Many people that have read his books and now seen the movies say that this is not true. One of the key themes in the movie is rejection of religion. The movie was thought to be a movie to degrade Christianity and promote atheism for children. Many parents will not be letting their kid see this movie. I do not plan on seeing this moving or taking my nieces and nephew to see it.

This movie is getting mixed reviews due to the controversy over it. Some of the people that have both read the book and seen the movie are saying that it is nothing alike and that is upsetting some of the people who were avid fans of the book, before the movie came out.

Some Catholic organizations are boycotting the film altogether. Some, however, have developed a wait and see approach about the movie. Some religious scholars have challenged the movie and are attempting to correct the movie and make changes about the way that the movie is being done.

The movie has been done with many actors and actresses that are famous and are being well promoted. This is helping with the promotion of the movie and making it seem like there is nothing wrong with the movie. You can now even find typical items in stores that have the movie plastered all over it.

Sadly, there will be sequels to the movie. The next one will come out in 2009. The Subtle Knife, potentially for release in late 2009; with the third book of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass to follow. No one is sure about what to expect with the next ones coming out.

There is one thing for sure, this movie has controversy and is pulling in money.

The book is better than the film. The film had so much promise.
