- The awards were spread out this year, as 9 different movies would win at least one award. Much like the Academy Awards, "Dances With Wolves" was the evening's top winner with 3 awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director; Screenplay). Three of the four Academy Award winners for acting (Jeremy Irons "Reversal of Fortune"; Kathy Bates "Misery"; Whoopi Goldberg "Ghost") would first win the Globe. The Globe winner for Best Supporting Actor, Bruce Davison (Longtime Companion) would have to settle for just a nomination as the Award would go to Joe Pesci for "Good Fellas." Jack Lemmon would receive the DeMille Award for lifetime achievement and was moved to tears, causing him to remark, "I don't know if I'm crying because I am so happy or because I haven't worked in damn near a year."
- This was another diverse year as 8 different movies would win at least one award with Walt Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" taking home the most with 3 awards (Best Picture - Musical/Comedy; Score; Song). The top three awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director; Screenplay) were unusually split among three different movies with "Bugsy" winning for Best Picture after losing every other nomination. Exclaimed producer Warren Beatty, when accepting the award, "We're all a little confused here." "Silence of the Lambs" would go on to win the Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Oliver Stone would win Best Director for "JFK" while the screenplay award went to Callie Khouri for "Thelma and Louise." Three of the four Academy Award winners for acting (Jodie Foster "Silence of the Lambs"; Jack Palance "City Slickers"; Mercedes Ruehl "The Fisher King") would win the Globe first while Globe winner for Best Actor - Drama, Nick Nolte (The Prince of Tides) would lost the Academy Award to Anthony Hopkins chilling role as Hannibal Lechter in "Silence of the Lambs." Robert Mitchum was the recipient of the DeMille award this year.
- Only six movies would win awards this year with five of them winning at least two and "Scent of a Woman" taking top honors with three awards (Best Picture - Drama; Best Actor Drama - Al Pacino; Best Screenplay). The Academy's big winner, Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven," won two awards (Best Director - Eastwood; Best Supporting Actor - Gene Hackman) that they would win at the Academy Awards. Tim Robbins, winner of Best Actor Musical/Comedy for "The Player" competed against himself with a second nomination for "Bob Roberts" but failed to secure an Academy Award nomination for either film. Three of the four acting prizes at the Academy Awards (Pacino; Hackman; Emma Thompson "Howard's End") would first win the Globe while the Academy winner for Best Supporting Actress, Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny), was not even nominated for a Globe award. Lauren Bacall was the recipient of the DeMille award.
- Yet again the awards were divided up amongst 8 different movies with "Schindler's List" taking top honors with 3 awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director; Screenplay). Not surprisingly, Schindler repeated its awards success at the Academy Awards. Three of the four acting honors at the Academy Awards (Tom Hanks "Philadelphia"; Holly Hunter "The Piano"; Tommy Lee Jones "The Fugitive") took home the Globe award first while the Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress, Anna Paquin (The Piano) settled for a Globe nomination but lost to Winona Ryder (The Age of Innocence). Robert Redford was the recipient of the DeMille award.
- Life was not like a box of chocolates on this night as the Globes predictably did know what you were going to get with "Forrest Gump" taking home the most awards with four (Best Picture - Drama; Best Actor Drama - Tom Hanks; Director; Screenplay). In an unusual turn, all four acting winners at the Academy Awards (Hanks; Jessica Lange "Blue Sky"; Martin Landau "Ed Wood"; Dianne Weist "Bullets Over Broadway") would all win Globes as well. Only two of the Supporting Actresses nominated for the Globe (Weist and Uma Thurman "Pulp Fiction") were nominated for the Academy Award. Academy nominees Rosemary Harris (Tom and Viv), Helen Mirren (The Madness of King George) and Jennifer Tilly (Bullets Over Broadway) were chosen over Globe nominees Kirsten Dunst (Interview With The Vampire), Sophia Loren (Pret-A-Porter) and Robin Wright Penn (Forrest Gump). Sophia Loren's loss in the Supporting Actress category was, no doubt, blunted by her receiving the DeMille award.
- Yet again there was a diverse group of winners, as 10 different movies would win a Globe. "Sense and Sensibility" was the evening's big winner with two Globes (Best Picture - Drama; Screenplay). "Braveheart" would dominate at the Academy Awards but only won one Globe for Mel Gibson as Best Director. Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) and Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) would win both the Globe and Academy Award for Best Actor and Supporting Actress respectively. The Academy Award winner for Best Actress, Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), and Best Supporting Actor, Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects), would settle for Globe nominations losing to Sharon Stone (Casino) and Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys) respectively. Sean Connery was the evening's recipient of the DeMille award.
- "Evita," which was largely ignored by the Academy Awards, was the big Globe winner taking home three awards (Best Picture - Musical/Comedy; Best Actress Musical/Comedy - Madonna; Song). The big winner at the Academy Awards, "The English Patient," settled for two awards (Best Picture - Drama; Score) tying it with "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (Best Director; Screenplay). Only one of the four acting awards at the Oscars would first win a Globe (Geoffrey Rush "Shine"). Best Actress winner Frances McDormand (Fargo) would lose the Globe to Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies). Best Supporting Actor winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Jerry Maguire) would lose the Globe to Edward Norton, making his film debut in "Primal Fear." Best Supporting Actress winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), a surprise pick, lost the Globe to overwhelming favorite Lauren Bacall (The Mirror Has Two Faces). Dustin Hoffman received the DeMille award and thanked presenter Tom Cruise by congratulating him on the DeMille award he was likely to receive thirty years later, after Hoffman was dead.
- There was little suspense at the Globes much like at the Academy Awards as the big winner was the smash hit epic "Titanic," which would win 4 awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director; Song; Score). For the first time in Globes history, the winners of the Best Actor and Actress in the Musical/Comedy category (Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt "As Good As It Gets") would go on to win the Academy Awards. The supporting actors spilt on their Academy success with Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential) taking both awards while Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) would settle for just the Globe while Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting) would win the Academy Award. Shirley MacLaine was the recipient of the DeMille award.
- This year marked the most famous incident in Globes history. Upon winning the award for Best Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-Series, Ving Rhames took the stage and invited fellow nominee Jack Lemmon to the stage. Looking shocked and confused, Lemmon joined Rhames at which time Rhames informed the audience that his mother had always taught him that giving was better then receiving, and proceeded to give his award to Lemmon, who repeatedly refused before finally giving in. As far as the movie awards, it may have been a shocking choice for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, but "Shakespeare in Love" was the evening's big winner with 3 awards (Best Picture - Musical or Comedy; Best Actress Musical/Comedy - Gwyneth Paltrow; Screenplay). "Saving Private Ryan," thought to be the huge favorite, won two top awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director). Paltrow was the only Globe winner to win the Academy Award while Judi Dench (Shakespeare In Love) was the only other Academy Award winner to even be nominated for a Globe. She would lose the Globe to Lynn Redgrave (Gods and Monsters). Both male Academy Award winners, Roberto Begnini (Life Is Beautiful) and James Coburn (Affliction), were overlooked by the Globes with Jim Carrey and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) taking the Globe honors. Carrey became the first actor to win Best Actor in a Drama and failed to get nominated for an Academy Award. Jack Nicholson was the evening's recipient of the DeMille award.
- "American Beauty" took the awards season by the throat and was the big winner all the way around. At the Globes it won 3 awards (Best Picture - Drama; Director; Screenplay). Two of the four Academy Award winners won the Globe first with the honors going to the women. Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry) and Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) won the honors at both while the men, Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) and Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules), settled for Oscar gold and Globe nominations. Denzel Washington (The Hurricane) and Tom Cruise (Magnolia) settled for Globe awards and Academy Award nominations. Barbra Streisand was the recipient of the DeMille award.
