When my son was in second or third grade, my ex and I went to an open house as we did since he began school. This time there was a table with a scouting representing talking to parents and answering questions. My son also wanted to join so we listened to what the rep had to say. Before the night ended, my ex and I were signing up to be den leaders. However, it didn't take long before my ex and I moved up in ranks when the current scoutmaster retired. Before long Pack 525 known as the Azteca pack residing out of Las Vegas Nevada became our life.
Our training continued with each event and class as well as our passion for kids as we moved up in the ranks of the organization.
Before long summer camp was a week a way and we were getting all the permission slips and gear together before we actually headed out.
During the weeklong camp out, two of our young men were given the chore to clean the latrine. This was because they missed the mark several times causing someone else the task of cleaning it up. They were not happy about it as they walked to the main office to get the cleaning supplies.
Once every one was finished with their morning routine my two young scouts began the nasty job of cleaning the bathroom. They scrubbed and sterilized each and every inch from toilets to sinks floors and stalls. When they were done, the bathroom sparkled. They then went back to the facilitator letting him know the bathroom was ready for inspection. The head of the camp went back with the boys and went through the bathroom carefully looking at every inch. Making sure it was clean. Once they approved it, they were free to join the rest of our group.
The next day the boys went in the bathroom as they had before and you would think that their most priced possession had been destroyed. They grew upset almost angry that someone came in and made a mess out of the bathroom. Lessons can be learned almost anywhere and this was the perfect time for one. As we tried to bring calm to the group, we explained to the boys that the reason they got upset was because they had worked hard cleaning the latrines and what they were feeling was pride. Before long their attitude changed as they changed. Making that camping trip one we all would remember for a long time.
