The Good Wedding Guest

Pharinet
Wedding season is upon us. We've all received our frou-frou invitations, and are overjoyed for the bride and groom. We can't wait to dress up in the summer heat and sweat out a ceremony and reception. Let's not forget our excitement at the prospect of shopping for an over-priced wedding gift. Being a good wedding guest is a tricky role to master. Whether it's a casual beach wedding or a formal affair, proper guest etiquette is essential.

First and foremost, we must R.S.V.P. Don't worry about that date on the card; it's just a suggested date. The bride and groom can always call the caterer and add on more. When you get around to it, send the card back. Remember to check all of the available meal options, that way you have a choice when the meal is served. Also, be sure to note that your children will be attending both the ceremony and reception. After all, you wouldn't want to miss the chance to dress up little John and Jane and show them off!

Purchasing a wedding present is easier than it seems. Sure, twenty dollars in a discount card is an option, but you're much more thoughtful than that. You could always choose something from the gift registry, but you want a gift that the happy couple will always remember you by. A mounted singing fish would be perfect for the den! Engraved his and hers beer steins would remind them of you every time they kicked back to share a brewski. A photo of that time you all went on vacation together (and the bride got that terrible sunburn) in a photo frame made by your very own children really says 'personal' and 'thoughtful.'

With the R.S.V.P. and gift out of the way, we can begin to consider our attire. The bride may be the star of the show, but that doesn't mean we can't win the best supporting actress role. After all, the happy couple wants their wedding to look beautiful, and that includes their guests. Pay no mind to the 'casual' dress code. After all, this is a wedding! Get out that sexy red dress with the slit up the thigh and don all that rhinestone jewelry you've been dying to wear. Don't forget your date. He must look just as stunning as you. Nothing says 'classy' like a blue tux and ruffled shirt!

When the wedding day arrives, take all the time you need to prepare yourself. They won't start the ceremony without the most important guest! At the reception, take full advantage of the open bar. After all, they wouldn't have an open bar if they didn't want their guests to enjoy themselves. Be certain to comment on those few extra pounds the bride seems to be carrying her mid-section, and ask quietly if perhaps there is another reason the couple chose to wed so soon. Toast the bride and groom loudly, telling their most embarrassing stories to the reception party. Everyone loves a good laugh.

Wish the bride and groom well as they leave the reception hall. Offer your best "wedding night" advice to the bride and groom. Don't leave out any details. Tell them they can call you anytime for advice - after all, you haven't been married seven times without learning a thing or two about marital bliss.

hehe, loved it. The last wedding I went to ended with the bride stepping into a fist aimed at her friend, she spent her wedding night in the hospital with a broken nose. Ah, a great start to many more weddings this season :)
