The Google Search Engine and How it Works

Finding Out What Makes the Google Search Engine so Powerful

Mike Burnside
Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page realize that they are a part of what is possibly the most closely watched company in the world. Google has now become one of the largest advertising entities whose revenues surpass the big five broadcast networks combined. The majority of this revenue generated by Google comes from those four line text ads that show up on every search engine result. However, as ad revenues continue to climb, Google is attempting to branch out beyond its search engine ad format.

Google Search Engine is a Left Brain Company
It has been said that Google is a company that probably has the largest concentration of left-brain types in the world. This has helped and hindered the company's growth in searching for more ad revenue growth. Google is very focused on providing the best search engine technology. Having this has allowed them to outgrow their rivals such as Yahoo and AOL. Google uses a complex formula of higher search engine results based on the number of clicks on ads. With that click formula, Google dominates search engine advertising on the web. Some research estimates have Google cornering 75% of the search engine advertising market.

Data is King at Google Search Engine
Google is a company driven by its rigorous data determined decisions. Their engineers believe that their data unlocks the mysteries of human behavior. They believe that their complex data can explain why we click and for how long. However, Google will not only rely on data but it has hired thousands of humans who help perfect their search engine results.

At Google Search Engine They Question the Normal
Those who run Google also run from conventional corporate thinking. They question management control and even encourage their engineers to spend at least 20% of their time on personal projects. Brin and Page have stated often that their company is more of a social entity rather than a financial one. When the company was initially offering itself public stock, their prospectus stated eight times that Google, "wants to make the world a better place." A very altruistic position to take for a company as large as Google.

The Google Search Engine and World Dominace
However, as the company has grown and positioned itself as a noble entity, many have not appreciated Google's dominance in search engine ads. Resistance continues to rise from government regulators and from Google's own customers. Back in 2008, Google proposed a search engine ad deal with Yahoo. This deal proposed by Google to keep Microsoft from acquiring Yahoo. The U.S. Justice Department threatened an antitrust lawsuit with Google until they backed down.
