The Government is Evolving into Our Most Serious Violator

Commentary on The Nature of Government, by Ayn Rand

Olga L. Chacon
According to Ayn Rand, the nature of a proper government is to protect the rights of men. The government should provide society with protection against physical force. Physical force should not be left in the hands of citizens. For example, if the government would failed to protect the people against force, they would shoot any stranger standing near their homes, or would bring about gangs to protect themselves. This is the reason why Rand states that government must act as a protector of mankind. Also, government is needed to settle contracts or disputes between men. For example, if two people have an agreement or contract, and one of them breaks it, it could cause the other person a serious economical injury. Another reason why the government must protect men's rights is fraud. For example, a person can commit fraud by taking someone else's property without the consent of the other under false statements. Conclusively, as Rand states that is the purpose of government to protect men from the dangers (fraud) that men can do to each other.

In addition, according to Rand, the nature of government to protect individual rights has been forgotten. Instead of protecting man's rights, the government is evolving into their most serious violator; the government is implementing slavery rather than freedom. The government is establishing the use of physical force, and not protecting men from it. The government is creating fear among human relationships. The government can do whatever it pleases while citizens are only able to act by permission. Overall, the concept of the law of government to protect individual rights has not been accomplished.

I agree with Ayn Rand that the nature of government should be to protect men's rights. The government has three departments for the protection of individuals which are: the police-to protect men against criminals, the armed service-to protect men against invaders, and the law courts-to settle disagreements objectively between men. I believe that to a certain extend these departments of protective action serve as protection for mankind, but on the other hand, I don't think that these departments of "the peace" serve men at their full potential. For example, the police can't be everywhere that there is crime.

Consequently, when the police is handling a serious case or felony, at the same time, there are so many crimes out there that are being committed on the streets. I think the police doesn't pay much attention to certain crimes because they consider them minor felonies. Therefore, the police focus their attention on major crimes. But I think the crimes that the police considers minor, men consider them major violations because they have been committed to men themselves. Moreover, in my opinion, if the police is not affected by any of these crimes, they don't care enough to stop the crimes. I believe that if we are going to obtain "protection" from the government, He must comply with His protective nature at a complete potential.
