The G&R Tavern's Fried Bologna Sandwich is a Roadfood Treat from Waldo, Ohio

Small Ohio Dive Gets National Food Network Acclaim

Paul Williams
The small town of Waldo, Ohio lies about 40 miles north of Columbus, just off of Route 23. Even with the recent closing of the town's popular Grolls furniture store after an over 100 year run, Waldo's real claim to fame is being the place to get the world's best fried bologna sandwich.

The G&R Tavern has stood in the same spot in the middle of Waldo since 1962. The tavern sports the menu of a typical sports bar, but its fried bologna sandwich quickly won the G&R both its national and international reputation.

The Food Network Comes to Waldo, Ohio's G&R Tavern

Over time the G&R Tavern and its fried bologna sandwich earned national acclaim from Al Roker on the Food Network, the CBS Sunday Morning show, and the popular foodie blog, Roadfood.com. This reputation is well deserved as a G&R bologna sandwich isn't made with paper thin slices of Oscar Meyer.

A visit to the G&R in Waldo reveals a pretty nondescript sports bar, with softball trophies lining the wall and a completely unpretentious feel. A sign behind the bar echoes this general sentiment, "Waldo has no town drunk; we all take turns." In short, this is the perfect place to expect the world's best fried bologna sandwich.

While the tavern's menu features other sports bar fare, the bologna sandwich is the point of any visit. (Although the bologna salad sandwich grows more tempting each time.) The prices are generally inexpensive. The G&R takes cash only; there is an ATM across the street.

Sweet Pickles, Raw Onion, and a Great Cut of Fried Bologna

New patrons should always order the fried bologna sandwich with onions, sweet pickle, and monterey jack cheese, as this is the standard issue for the G&R Tavern's bologna sandwich. The house-made bologna is served up in 3/4-inch slabs of glory, usually blocking the view of the bottom bun.

Mustard is the condiment of choice at the G&R; the flavor combination with the sweet pickles, onion, and mustard is reminiscent of a Crabill's hamburger - another Ohio road food destination worth visiting. French Fries are a perfect compliment to the bologna sandwich. Other fried side items dot the G&R's menu as options.

The G&R Tavern well deserves its national reputation as the world's best fried bologna sandwich, and it is definitely worth a trip to Waldo, Ohio to find out why. The G&R's house-made bologna is truly an American delicacy.
