The Grammys - All Show and Flash

Whatever Happened to Music?

Susan Leak
Call me old fashioned, call me over the hill, but is all the flash and over the top stunts really necessary for musicians to make it today?

The Grammys Awards last night was a show and a half. within the first hour or so, they had more over the top skits and acts than many a three ring circus. The performers in elaborate costumes and makeup, awash in plenty of flashing lights, lip synching their songs as the strutted back and forth across the stage, flipping and twirling their hair. One artist, Pink, even went as far as hanging from the ceiling for half of her song. In all fairness Elton John and Lady Gaga's duet was good, and considering their persona's, I did expect the makeup etc, but I failed to see the connection to their get-up and the song. But at least they did actually perform their song. Out of all that I witnessed, only Twenty One Guns performed by Green Day and the cast of Glee was the one true class act. The rest of you, what ever happened to actually performing your music?

Unfortunately, the public seems to want the outrageous. The more bizarre and flashy the better. This is sad for those musicians that rely on their talent. The Grammy's still is a prestigious award, but if you are tuning in to this or any of the award shows to and actually hope to hear live performances you are wasting your time. And for them to just make mention of those artist, producers etc that have contributed so much to the industry to make time for the Divas and others to prance across the stage to piped in music is sad.

But it is all about the ratings now, not about the music industry and for that they and the artists have degraded themselves to a show of just who can put on the most spectacular show. The music has become just the soundtrack.

I am curious as to what you think. Is this good for the music industry? Is the Grammys still an award for music? or is it all about the act?

Music has become about 'the image', as opposed 'the sound', which is ironic in itself. It's a cheap gimmick/tactic to hide the fact that the people you are seeing have no talent and aren't artists at all. It's all a big sellout. And people's pockets are being filled for it. But the kids are too gullible and easily led. And they get forced fed this rubbish, not having any alternate option. Sad, but that's the modern world for you! http://www.themusicvoid.com/

Lady Gaga should be Lady "Aaarrrgh!" She looked horrid.

Watched the Grammys for a couple of minutes, realized it was an empty waste of my time, and moved on to other things. I agree with your premise: it was all flash and splash.
