The GRAMMY'S are Going Green

Lisa Carey
It may be a red carpet event, but this year the stars will also shine bright with the GRAMMY's going green. Sure, GRAMMY Nominee Cee Lo Green will be performing at The 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards which will take place live on Sunday, Feb. 13 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in high definition and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network from 8-11:30 p.m. (ET/PT) but how else will The 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards be going green?

With the help and consultation of NRDC's (National Resource Defense Council) Allen Hershkowitz who according to his bio is "a Senior Scientist at NRDC, specializing in issues related to sustainable development, supply chain management, industrial ecology, the paper industry, health risks, solid waste management, recycling, medical wastes, and sludge. I coordinate some of the world's most prominent institutional greening initiatives, including the Academy Awards telecast, the GRAMMY Awards, the "Broadway Goes Green" initiative, and the greening of Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and the USTA; the GRAMMY's will be:

Making eco-friendly flooring choices using red carpets made from recycled water bottles.

Preparing and serving local organic food choices.

Utilizing 100% renewable power and reusable service on china and crystal.

Composting all silverware and food as well as recycling all plastic, glass and aluminum.

I wonder if anyone thought of ride sharing, after all those limousines are pretty big and use a lot of gas or of putting on their finest organically grown materials and fair trade jewel?

Whiles these initiatives do not seem to be a chart buster, on the green scene every little bit counts. Fortunately the music industry doesn't plan on stopping with those initiatives but are taking advantage of the opportunity to place the spotlight on going green with "Show Me the Green Light," a conversation and partnership between the music industries Recording Academy and Waste Management, the official recycling partner of the Recording Academy and the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards. During this meeting of the minds, it is hoped that awareness will be raised regarding environmentally friendly decisions that could be made in the production and packaging of music and more importantly how to address the problems that "e-waste" is causing on the environment. Other participants include Sony Electronics; Rohan Marley, House of Marley entrepreneur and son of Bob Marley; the Clorox Company; New House LLC; and Opportunity Green.

Will people be saying "Hooray for Hollywood" for the eco-friendly nature of this event or will it simply be a "one hit wonder?" The performance of ten-time GRAMMY winner and Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Bob Dylan with current GRAMMY nominee Mumford & Sons and folk-rock band the Avett Brothers in a special salute to acoustic music; and six-time GRAMMY winner and current nominee Dr. Dre-in his first live television performance in more than a decade-will grace the GRAMMY stage for the first time and join current 10-time nominee Eminem for a historic collaboration, along with Maroon 5 front man and current GRAMMY nominee Adam Levin Wonder, as well as Mick Jagger's first ever live performance at the Grammy's are all making music history news, maybe these sustainable choices will be considered another "historic" event to hit the entertainment industry.

I wonder what the top eco-friendly celebrities have to say.
