The Grapefruit Diet: An Overview

Thomas Yoon
The Grapefruit Diet has been around for a long time, in fact it may be the longest lasting diet plan in existence. Also known as the "Hollywood Diet", this plan touts being able to lose 10 pounds in 12 days. The rationale behind this diet is that grapefruit contains enzymes that reduce the amount of insulin the body can produce. This in turn will encourage fat metabolism.

What it consists of is a regimented meal plan, mostly low in carbohydrates and high in protein. With each meal, a small glass of grapefruit or juice is consumed. The meals can be prepared in any fashion. Dieters are encouraged to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. Some variations require the dieter to consume as much black coffee as possible. Snacking is not permitted except for a small glass of skim milk after dinner. Salad dressing and butter can be used in limitless amounts. The grapefruit juice must not be sweetened.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no scientific evidence that this diet works. Although there are many success stories related to the Grapefruit Diet the true mechanism behind this fad lies in the total amount of calories consumed. With or without grapefruit juice, the dieter will consume around 800 - 1000 calories, mostly in the form of protein. As with any type of weight loss, reduction in caloric intake is the key to fat metabolism. An increased amount of protein consumed gives the dieter a more full feeling with less food consumed. The caffeine consumed with the black coffee can raise cardiovascular output increasing the amount of calories burned. Also, a properly hydrated dieter will metabolize fats more efficiently.

Grapefruit however is a very nutritious food. It is very low on the glycemic index and only has 60 - 80 calories per serving. For every 100 grams of grapefruit consumed, you will intake 56% of your daily required recommendation of vitamin C. Grapefruit is high in lycopene that has been shown to reduce the chance of certain types of cancer. Grapefruit is naturally fat free and is low in sodium.

In summary, the Grapefruit Diet is a modification of any low calorie, high protein diet. There are no mystical properties of grapefruit that can help with fat metabolism. Dieters who chose this method must be vary careful since grapefruit can interact with certain drugs such as blood pressure medication and antibiotics. Like any other diet plan, you should consult your physician prior to starting.
