The Great Debate in Iraq: Should U.S. Troops Withdraw or Should They Be Increased?

Daniel Rein
I recently got into a heated discussion with my friends concerning the issue in Iraq. My position in that the United States should get out of Iraq as quickly and as fast as possible while other people I know want to increase the troops. I give the merits and arguments to each.

Senator John McCain will undoubtedly run for president like he did in the last election when he lost in the Republican primary elections to George Bush. McCain is considered by many to be a moderate candidate, unlike George Bush who has polarized the nation. McCain's biggest stance is his position that the troops should be increased in Iraq. His theory is that this has become another Vietnam War in that only some of the troops are in Iraq and that the U.S. only has one foot in. McCain served in the Vietnam War and believed that if the U.S. had increased troops in Vietnam, the U.S. would have won the war. He has taken the same stance with Vietnam. Increase troop level, win the wear and then bring the soldiers back home.

My argument to this viewpoint is two-fold. First off, why is the United States of America still in Iraq? Can someone please give me an answer to this question? Because it has been frustrating to me to see families grieving over the loss of their loved ones who have fought and died in Iraq when the soldiers are fighting and giving their lives for a cause that has no meaning anymore. Soldiers don't even know what they are fighting for anymore. Over 3,000 soldiers have died and for no cause.

Reports have already been issued by the Senate committees stating that there is no link between Suddam Hussein who was executed a few days ago and terrorists or nuclear weapons.

My position is to call for an immediate withdrawal of troops and cut our losses. My position is as follows. There is no longer any legitimacy for the American War in Iraq. We have gotten rid of a dictator but that hardly matters. The U.S. and CIA have been guilty in the past of putting dictators and ruthless leaders into power in other countries just because they said they would support the United States and not communism. American worldwide support has deteriorated to the brink and no country, not even faithful England supports the U.S. war in Iraq. The international community hates the U.S. for their involvement in the war. Soldiers are dying and there is no end in sight for winning this war. This is Vietnam again people. Maybe not on the same scale that 50,000 plus American soldiers lost their lives but it has the same feel to it. There is no roadmap for this war and I guarantee you that by the time President Bush's presidency is over, we will still be in Iraq. Bush declared victory when an invasion was mounted in Iraq. Months and a year later we are still there and we have not won this war.

The solution that no one wants to hear that some war people and generals have said to bomb the heck out of the entire country like in Japan in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and start over. But the humanitarian country that we are, we have to send in soldiers to risk their lives for fear of killing civilians. Civilians are casualties of war and it happens. However, modern leaders don't want to face the bad publicity and have dead innocent people on their legacy. If this strategy isn't adopted, then Iraqi rebels against the U.S. can just hide among civilians and keep on attacking American soldiers as the body count will rise.

Its time we cut our losses and get out troops out now! We need a leader who will change the course of our nation and McCain is just not the answer.
