The Greatest Eight Days in History

Did you know that much of the New Testament gospels focus on just eight days in Jesus' life. The account of Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday takes up 25% of Matthew, 38% of Mark, 29% of Luke, and an amazing 48% of John. Needless to say, these were important days!

I thought you might enjoy seeing an outline of this Holy Week that includes scripture references. Perhaps you can set aside some time this weekend to look up these passages or just review the list below and meditate on the wondrous work of our Savior Jesus!

Here are the eight days as recorded in the Bible:

Sunday (Palm Sunday) - Luke 19:28-40

Monday (Cleansing of the Temple) - Mark 11:12-19

Tuesday and Wednesday (Teaching in the temple - The plot against his life) - Matthew 21:18-26:16

Thursday (Maundy Thursday)

  • The commandment to love one another - John 13:1-7
  • The Last Supper - Matthew 26:17-30
  • The prayer in Gethsemane - Matthew 26:36-46
  • The arrest of Jesus - Matthew 26:47-56
  • The late night hearing - Matthew 26:57-68
  • Peter's denial of Christ - Matthew 26:69-72

Friday (Good Friday) - Matthew 27:11-56

  • The trials before Pilate and Herod
  • Jesus is mocked and tortured by the soldiers
  • The crucifixion

Saturday (Jesus is in the guarded tomb) - Matthew 27:57-65

Sunday (Easter) - Luke 24

  • The women find the empty tomb
  • Peter and John race to the tomb
  • Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus
  • Jesus appears to the disciples
