The Greatest Lies Are the Believable Lies

The Mistakes of Adolf Hitler

Carly Love
Adolf Hitler once said that the greater the lie, the more people will believe it. I both agree and disagree with his statement. I feel that it is not how big the lie is, but how detailed it is. A big lie would be saying something completely ludicrous. Nobody in their right mind would believe something that is obviously absurd. On the other hand, a detailed lie gives information that will lead someone to believe that it is the truth.

If I had to choose whether I more strongly agreed or disagreed with his statement, I would more strongly disagree. If someone tells you that they heard about a man that got abducted by aliens, had tests performed on him, and returned to Earth pregnant, you would not believe them because it is obviously false. If the same person had instead told you that they saw a man on the news that was pregnant, but this man was actually a woman that had a partial sex change, you would believe it. You would believe this story more so than the first because you have learned more details about the situation. There is nothing in that statement that sounds completely ridiculous, so you would believe it before you would believe the story about aliens.

Nothing has been proven, but Adolf Hitler is said to had suffered from numerous diseases, some that might have affected his brains capability to function properly, and had an addiction to methamphetamine. Therefore should any of us really believe anything that this man has said, even if it was just a small, seemingly meaningless quote? Hitler did great and terrible things; he did most of which he accomplished using lies. People were foolish enough to believe the lies that this man told. I think that people should have learned by now to be able to see through lies. If it is a great or a big lie, like many of the lies that Hitler told, then we as people should definitely be able to pick out if it is the truth or not. Hitler definitely had a good reason to use the quote, "The greater the lie, the more people will believe it." This worked for him many times. He convinced hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people that Jews were bad. That does not make his statement true for all people. Just because people took in the great lies that Hitler told, does not mean that great lies will shadow every persons eyes.

Before you decide if you believe a lie or not, first you need to ask yourself something. Ask yourself if you truly know the difference between a big lie and a small lie. Or is there truly a difference? Are all lies not equally as bad?
