The Green, Green Grass of Home

A Poem Celebrating National Poetry Month and Honoring Earth Day

Karen Gros
The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
When there was no pollution,
To foul up the air.

The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
Of days when kids loved to play outdoors,
And parents didn't have to worry about toxic wastes.

The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
Of horses grazing in the pasture,
Nibbling on grass and clover without fear of tainted food.

The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
When we took dips in the creek,
With no worries of water contamination.

The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
Of fishing in the river,
And no warning signs posted of high levels of mercury.

The green, green grass of home,
Reminds me of simple days,
Days that have come and gone,
Toxic wastes are everywhere.

Oh how I long for the green, green grass of home.
