The idea for the resort came from a St. Louis Entrepreneur, E.W. Grove. He had earned millions from selling an elixir during the 1890s known as Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic. He wanted a hotel that would feel like home to his guests, never lacking in any conveniences. The design for the hotel came from a drawing by Grove's son-in-law, Fred Seely. It was designed to the likeness of the western railway hotels. With a crew of 400 men, the construction of the Grove Park Inn Resort was completed in a year.
Many famous Americans have been a guest at the resort. During 1935-1936, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a guest. Among others are Harry Houdini, Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, and eight United States Presidents, from Wilson to George Bush. The Resort has also been home to a Food Network program shoot, and has been featured on the Travel Channel as a "Haunted Hotel".
At one point, the Inn was only left standing because it was going to cost too much to tear down. This one until it caught the eye of Charles Sammons. He and his wife Elaine fully restored the hotel, and because of his hard work, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
In 1998, the $42 million Spa was constructed and added to the Resort. Future plans include adding condominiums, and even more luxury.
Being a guest at the resort means you are treated with the utmost kindness, respect, and care, but all of this does come with a hefty price. For more information, see the Grove Park Inn website. Guest Services are extensive, offering childcare, children's activities, golf, dining, and more. Reservations require a deposit equal to one night stay. Package reservations require 50% of the total package price. Reservations must be canceled a full 7 days in advance to receive the entire deposit refund. There is a $150 fee for smoking in a non-smoking room, and only service pets with documentation are allowed at the hotel.
In addition to hotel accommodations, the Grove Park inn has space for conventions, and events of all sorts. It is a popular place for the locals to marry!
