The Gulf Oil Spill and BP!

When Do We Do Something, Besides Wait for Them?

Rose Richmond
BP (formerly "British Petroleum") is a British global energy company that is also the third largest global energy company and the 4th largest company in the world. Knowing this should provide some comfort in this ongoing saga called the "Gulf Oil Spill". However, due to their obvious lack of knowledge and experience in handling this mess, it does not provide any comfort whatsoever.

My question would be: How long are we going to stand by and let them make the decisions? They are polluting OUR part of the ocean! They are killing our fishing industry! They are killing our wildlife! Yet, they continue to try and tell us they know what they are doing.
First they lied about responsibility and the safety measures that should have been in place. Then they refused help from our Government and our knowledgeable scientific community. They refused help from people in the industry. Weeks later and millions of gallon of oil later, they are still stonewalling the help factor and now are trying to cap their responsibility losses. They want to cap the expense at 27 million dollars. That is not even a drop in the bucket for the expense it will cost long term.

BP is in over it's head and our Government should step in and say "Enough!" You are polluting our part of the world and yet you want to get out cheap. Hopefully everyone affected will sue them. We are allowing this wretched, irresponsible company to dictate the rules in our country. They don't have a clue how to fix the doggone leak. They lowered a METAL box over it, in frigid, deep water, where ice clogged it up. That idea took over a week to even take place. Now, they are talking about another, smaller box..What?

All of this occurred because of lack of procedures in place to begin with. Procedures that were in place, written by the oil companies for their convenience, were circumvented for their convenience. If procedures would have been properly followed, this accident may have been prevented.

Now, we have millions of gallons of oil floating on our ocean, killing our wildlife and our industries. This pollution will last many years to come. There are already dolphins floating up on the beaches and birds dying. We may not know the true impact for a long time.

People from the fishermen to the State of Louisiana are starting to sue BP. Good for them! Anyone and everyone should file a lawsuit if they have been affected by this. BP is obviously too big for it's britches. They have been king so long, they don't think they can be affected. It is time for America to stop being bullied and used. BP has been blatantly irresponsible here. Our Government has also been irresponsible here. They should have told BP to back up and take our help. With so many trying to help, someone must have an answer for this.

If no one truly does have a viable solution, then why the heck are we drilling offshore? If we don't have any better safety measures that work, than this mess, we don't have any business drilling. How many times can we withstand this sort of spill before it totally destroys our country and our ocean.

BP should be treated as a criminal. They knew they were not following the proper procedures. They knew that the oil rigs were not safe. They knew they needed more help, yet they refused to acknowledge any of this.

With some luck and with transparency and our Government looking for answers, along with the millions in lawsuits coming, maybe BP will be forced out of business. Enough with these big, irresponsible companies and their lack of concern for be responsible.

BP should pay for every single dime that it costs to fix this mess. Even at the expense of the people working for them. It should be clear, if you circumvent the correct procedures and safety processes, you should be held accountable for every single expense incurred by the fallout.

Write your Congress people and your Senators. Write the President. BP should be held accountable and our Government should step in now to take over the capping of the well or stopping the oil.

This is a very frustrating situation and they need to stop blaming one another and do something.

Shame on them for shifting the blame. I hope everyone affected sues them. I for one am not going to buy anymore BP products.
