The Hair Volume Trick You Haven't Heard About

Wynn Murray
Every girl loves having lots of volume in her hair. But it's tedious to have to tease your hair to add volume, with all the hair spray and time necessary. And it's darn disappointing when you wash your hair and your hair goes back to being limp.

Don't you wish there was a way to get hair volume to last?

Luckily, there is. With a temporary or permanent perm, you can have the hair volume you want without spending hours on your hair each morning.

Right now, you're saying, "Perm? Isn't that the thing that caused all that horrible hair from the '80s?" That is true, but the trick is not overdoing the perm. If you only perm your hair lightly, it will give you very loose waves that gradually falls out so it just adds volume to your hair. There's a reason salons now call perms "texturizing." Light perms add texture and volume to your hair.

A temporary perm is the best way to go for hair volume. If you can find a home perm kit (they are not always easy to find), you can give your hair volume and waves by leaving the perm solution in for a short amount of time. The perm will almost completely wash out in 6 to 20 shampooing of your hair, leaving you with beautiful hair full of volume.

If you can't find a temporary perm kit, you can also use a regular perm kit, which is readily available in most drug stores. While "perm" stands for "permanent," a $4 drug store perm won't actually last forever, so no fears. If you have very straight, perm-resistant hair, the most you will get is big waves and volume, even if you leave the perm solution in a long time. If you have fine hair that curls easily, make sure to check the hair frequently and take the rollers out before it gets too curly. This way, you will end up with big, loose waves and added volume to your hair.

The great thing about home kits is that they're cheap and easy to use. However, if you are wary about putting a perm in your hair yourself, you can always go to a salon. These days, salons tend to call perms "texturizing," partly due to negative 80s connotations of the word "perm," and partly because these new-age perms will add beautiful texture and volume to your hair.

If you're nervous try out a temporary perm. You'll probably love the hair volume and be back for more!
