The Hardest Thing

L. Lee Scott
The hardest thing
Is the way they look at me,
Those who knew before I did.
Some with pity or compassion,
More with contempt or satisfaction,
As though I brought this on myself.

The hardest thing
Is the way you looked at me
Avoiding my eyes,
Keeping your face hard, cold, pitiless,
So different from the one I loved.

The hardest thing
Is seeing you everywhere,
That turn of the head, the distinctive walk,
And each time -- no, another stranger.

The hardest thing?
The words that echo through
The silent vacant house:
Too late.

My better poetry is written when I am in my "bitter man" phase;) Well, not bitter I suppose, but certainly situations which make me think help with the expression.

Thank you. I seem to be in what my sister would call a "bitter woman" phase right now.... I'm hoping it will pass, but it does help me write poetry!
