October is Libra's home, but it begins on September 24 this year, which occurs shortly after the Harvest Moon event.
Libra is the point of balance in the zodiac. The emphasis is neither on matter nor spirit. Almost as though it is a point of neutrality and harmony, the things that Libra is most well known for are prominent in the night skies.
Harvest Moon festivals are abundant throughout spiritual, and meditation groups everywhere. In general, the full magnificence of the Full Moon on this night is enough of a reason for observation and celebration.
A number of spiritually focused groups are concentrating on world peace. Harmonious intentions lead to a prayer for world peace, and an end to suffering through hunger and poverty.
The meditation for this Harvest Moon can be about humanity seen as a loving family. Visualize this for just a moment while viewing the dramatically gorgeous, once a year Full Moon event.
A few facts about the Harvest Moon:
This is a time when the moon is nearest the autumnal equinox, which is on September 22. As a result, the Moon rises very quickly at this time.
The looks of the huge, colorful full moon is a deception - it's really smaller than at other times during the year.
One of the reasons it is so colorful isn't so romantic. Because of its horizontal position, there is more pollution to look through when viewing.
If children are included in your Moon viewing, there is also a fun video of tricks to use for viewing the Harvest Moon narrated by the late Jack Horkheimer. What will be a great legacy, these tricks are about visual perception and different ways to view the night sky. The video is a short clip and is at the hyperlink located in the resource box to the right.
Sadly Jack Horkheimer, an avid sky gazer, passed away a year ago this month. His enthusiasm for watching the night skies lives on, though. Consequently, the video is from 2009, but is still applicable to any Harvest Moon. In this clip he associated with the Miami Science Museum and Planetarium.
Don't forget to mark your calendar for a most lovely experience during a time for a special focus on the Moon.
