This Sunday,October 4th, families have been invited to the Harvest Moon Festival on the garden lawn of Brown's City Pool between the Pendleton Community Library and The Community Garden and Pumpkin Patch where all sorts of fall fun will occur.

There will be hilarious fun with an old fashioned pie eating contest where contestants will attempt to consume as much pie as possible in a timed race. That sounds like my kind of race! There will a pumpkin spitting contest to see who can spit their pumpkin seeds the longest distance. Food treats at the community party will include making S'mores at the bonfire, all sorts of yummy fall and treats. Good's Ice Cream will be there handing out their great ice cream. You can make some fun fall crafts and watch a magic show. Bob May will be making balloon animals for the kiddies in the crowd.

One of the special events that will be highlighted are the Jack-O-Lantern carving contest. Contestants are to bring their own pre-carved artistic pumpkin and will compete for prizes in the funniest, scariest and most original categories. Children attending the event will receive a free pumpkin from the The Community Garden Project that was sponsored this year by the Pendleton Community Library. Pumpkins were planted last spring and all through the summer have been nurtured and cared for by volunteers. Now it's harvest time and everyone gets to share in the harvest! The project was sponsored by a grant from the South Madison County Community Fund, a local grant making not for profit.

The day's festivities will end with story telling by national story teller, Bob Sanders, who will delight the crowd with tales of fall and possibly a few "ghost stories", told around a roaring bonfire. Bring a chair or blanket and get ready to howl under the FULL MOON with your friends and family.

Community festivals like these are the heart of a community, a time to gather and celebrate the joys of life through the seasons. As a new resident of Pendleton, I am delighted by the constant feeling of small town Americana I am finding in my new home. I shall be at the festival, grand-daughter in hand as we have some fall festival fun!

There seems to be a lot going on in Indiana, what with unique food traditions to other events. I love pie, but I couldn't take part in a pie eating contest. I'd be sick!
