The Haunted Maze

JoAnn Selke

It seemed like yesterday that they were out trick or treating on Halloween. Unfortunately, they were too old for that this year. Although they would miss all the candy, it would be a night like none they had ever experienced. Tonight, they were going to the Haunted Maze.

Ada, Lauren, Marx, and Paul have been looking forward to tonight all year long. After hearing all the stories about how scary the Haunted Maze was, they could not wait to join in on the fun. When they arrived, the line was as long as expected. After all, it was a national attraction. Thankfully, there were plenty of drinks and snacks available while they waited their turn.

As the minutes passed, they watched teens go through the maze and return. It didn't appear that anyone was devastated. There were a few screams here and there, but mostly all they heard was laughter. They waited almost two hours before it was finally their turn to enter.

Lauren and Ada were a little nervous, but Paul and Marx reassured them as they entered the maze. As they walked through the maze, twisting and turning this way then that, they began to get confused about where they had been and where they should go. Of course, that was the point of a maze. As they approached an unusually dark turn, someone with a chainsaw came charging at them. All four screamed and ran away.

In the chaos, Ada got separated from the group. She called for the others, but no one answered. Her sense of direction was almost zero, but she tried to be brave and find her way to the others. She calmly walked back the way she thought she had ran, thinking she would find the others that way.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group managed to stay together and were looking for Ada. Walking through the maze was confusing to them all, but they could not imagine how Ada felt being all alone. Luckily, Marx and Paul had some sense of direction and found their way back to the man with the chainsaw. They asked him if he saw what direction their friend went. He said he wasn't sure, but that he would help them look.

As Ada reached another dark turn, she noticed a shadow behind her. She turned in hopes to find one of her friends, but instead was greeted by someone wielding a machete. She screamed and ran towards the turn, running right into several bats hanging from above. She slipped and fell, but jumped up and began running and screaming again.

Lauren could hear Ada screaming and prompted the others to stop and listen. All of a sudden, Ada ran right past them screaming. Her friends ran behind her and she led them out of the maze.

After Ada caught her breath, she vowed never to go in the maze again. Her friends laughed, but agreed that maybe they should skip the maze for a few more years. Maybe when they are sixteen, it will not be as scary.
