The Headband: A Hairstyle Comeback

For Short or Long Hair

Linda M. McCloud
I've always loved the look of a headband. To me, it represents class and sophistication. I was very happy to hear that the headband has made a huge comeback on the hair accessory must have list.

Why did they make a comeback?

Could their comeback have anything to do with Hillary Clinton running for President? Could their comeback have anything to do with how busy we all are? You know a headband is a quick and easy way to tame unruly hair. Or could their comeback just have happened for the simple rule that it seems that once something is in style it will come back around sooner or later.

Headbands are believed to have been worn as far back as 600 B.C. In the 1880's women used to make their headbands out of branches and flowers. They were mainly used for decorations such as during wedding ceremonies.

Why should you wear a headband?

You should wear one because it shows off your face. It shows the shape of your face. It reveals your eyes and your jaw line. (Yes, showing off your face is a good thing).

Plus, on warm days it is a nice way to get the hair away from your face which will in turn keep you cooler. It will also keep your looking fresher.

They give you many style options.

They are affordable.

Of course, they also help you on bad hair days, especially when your bangs just will not corporate with you.

Who can wear a headband?

Basically any woman with any hair style can wear a headband. Note here, men can also wear them, especially during sporting events.

They look great on short and long hair.

What kinds of headbands are the most popular this season?

Actually, many styles of bands are popular. You can wear thin bands or thick bands. You can wear them made from ribbon, metal or plastic. You can even wear several thin bands in your hair for a unique look.

Some of the best styles in headbands are:

The basic black ones. You can buy these at inexpensive prices at many department stores. The inexpensive ones often look just as nice as their expensive counter parts.

Ribbon bands. Ribbon bands can be cut to the desire thickness. But an inch width of ribbon can really stand out in one's hair.

Stretchy headbands. No, these aren't the sweat band look. These are cotton mesh and elastic headbands. The silver and gold variety are really popular, especially against dark hair.

Gold wired headbands. This gives the wearer a royal and regal look.

Wrap around headbands

These have a sporty and funky look about them.

What isn't so popular

Wearing a headband and then lots of jewelry. Allow your headband to express yourself and then keep the rest of your accessories more low key.

Wearing headbands with lots of bows. This is a too dated look.

Headbands always remind me of Olivia Newton John singing Physical.

I love headbands although I have to be careful. Some give me an awful headache.

That's good news! I wore them with all kinds of styles. They were always great for holding hair back for facials too. 5 0r 6 years ago I used leftover yarn to crochet some.

For some reason, I have a hard time keeping the damn things on my head. They always want to gravitate toward the back of my head and slide off... yet i keep trying because I think they're cute as hell.
