The common yellow ground mustard we know so well is a strong herbal medicine. Although it's harmful to the digestive system when consumed extensively, it has many other beneficial uses.
The Health Benefits of Mustard - Purging and Vomiting
Mustard is an age-old purgative. It's used to produce vomiting when necessary, such as in the case of accidental poisoning. To use mustard to produce vomiting, steep a teaspoon of the ground seeds in a cup of boiling water. Drain and allow the mixture to cool completely, and then drink all at once.
The Health Benefits of Mustard - Congestion
For congestion of the head or lungs, mustard is an excellent remedy. To treat congestion with mustard, put a tablespoon full of the ground seeds into a foot bath and soak the feet. This will draw the blood to the lower part of the body and help relieve congestion.
The Health Benefits of Mustard - Respiratory Problems
For pneumonia, bronchitis and other respiratory complaints, mustard is a wonderful remedy. Make a poultice of ground mustard and apply directly to the chest and throat to help alleviate respiratory problems of all kinds.
The Health Benefits of Mustard - Kidney Problems
For irritation of the kidneys, mustard is an herb that can't be beat. Make a mustard paste and apply directly to the lower back, over the kidneys.
To make mustard paste for kidney irritation, combine one part ground mustard and four parts flour. Whole wheat flour is preferred for this application. Make a thick paste of the mixture by adding egg whites, usually one or two will do the job. The mustard paste should be thick enough to spread easily onto a cloth. If you don't have egg whites on hand, you can use water instead but this could blister the skin. Just make sure to remove the mustard paste as soon as the burning becomes uncomfortable.
Spread the mustard paste onto a clean cotton cloth and apply over the kidneys. This will burn but should not blister as long as you are sure to include the egg whites in the above instructions. Remove the paste as soon as the burning becomes uncomfortable. Be sure to thoroughly wash the mustard paste from the skin, leaving no residue behind.
