The Health Benefits of Weight Loss

It Isn't Just for the Looks

The Informer
When you think of health, what pops into your mind? Healthy foods like fruits and vegetables? How about exercise and staying fit? But, the question is, does a lean body pop into your mind? Weight loss isn't only for the movies stars, and isn't only for the superficiality of having a "swim-suit body." Weight loss is actually a very important factor in actually staying healthy. You might already have figured this, but do you really understand it? How does weight loss affect your health?

Obesity is a very complex problem that affects all aspects of our life. It affects us in many ways as well. Socially, it can result to several embarrassing situations in public gatherings. Emotionally, it can cause poor self image, low self-esteem and even depression. Physically, it poses very high health risks and may even be fatal. In the United States alone obesity is a major cause of hundreds of preventable deaths each year. Taking into account the adverse effects excess fats can have on an individual, weight loss becomes a very important part of our lifestyles.

Being overweight or obese can cause a multitude of heath risks, including hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and gall bladder disease, among others. There are even gender-specific health concerns commonly associated with obesity and most of these concerns are potentially lethal. For example, there is so much more likelihood for obese men to die from colon or prostate cancer than those who are not obese.

The good news is that losing at least ten percent of your excess weight goes a long way towards improving your overall health. A healthy height-weight ratio helps a person lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as increase energy levels. It also improves your mobility and breathing, and reduces the aches and pains that constantly plague you. Furthermore, weight loss helps you sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed. Best of all, it significantly reduces your risk of sudden death from stroke or heart failure.

Hence, there should be no question of why we should lose weight; only of what weight loss program will work best for us. There is no need for argument - whether you are concerned about how you look or not, it is necessary for each individual to maintain a healthy weight in order to avoid most serious health conditions. Staying healthy is indeed the best reason to stay fit and trim.
