The Health of Haiti's Children
Haiti's Children Are at Risk of Suffering More Than Hunger, as Medical Supplies Are Limited
The health of Haiti's children has long been the main focus of certain charitable groups. However, some don't have the funds needed to help on the level that is required. After the earthquake on January 12th, several churches and organizations in Charlotte formed partnerships to strengthen their efforts. There is the possibility that many who survived the earthquake may later die from their injuries or infections.
Children who are not able to be identified will eventually be turned over to orphanages. Children are being treated by physicians who say some won't talk, or are too young to speak. Meanwhile, agencies are coopering to create a database to help parents find missing children. Some expressed concern that parents may not realize their child or children survived the earthquake.
Charlotte residents have been donating to local churches, as well as The Salvation Army and The American Red Cross. If you are not sure where to give money or items, use one of the links below or contact: Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road in Charlotte. Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti is partnering with this church. For more details contact Sabine Guerrier @ 704-890-9903.
Physical donations may include peanut butter, canned foods with pop top lids, water, flashlights with batteries and solar lanterns. Also needed: Deodorant, flip flops, jeans, sneakers and used cell phones. Money is needed for airline tickets. Trucks are needed to help move items to the airport.
Stop Hunger Now will assist in delivering the items collected to Haiti. A link for this group is listed below. Anyone who is not sure where to donate may want to call a local church to see who is helping in their area.
The health of Haiti's children is in many hands. With so many people involved Charlotte residents are hopeful the mission will be accomplished.
