The Heart of a Champion

The Glory of Being a Legendary Fighter

Joey Liam
One gloomy day, a poor lad was born
in a dire and dark region of the society;
Where thieves greatly thrived, and corrupt politicians
beguiled the citizens living in poverty;
They promised the destitutes jobs and better livelihood
and to help them get over their cruel situations;
But when they got elected,
they started right off with their acts of abomination.

The young lad was raised religiously
by his father and mother, the very best they could;
They molded him to a person with dignity and honor
and a gritty commitment to no evil but good.
He struggled as a young teen
but his will was never broken.
His desires to be a man of respect and glory
established his pure devotion.

Devotion to his family, especially to his parents
and to the livelihood which he had known-
The sport called the Sweet Science
where a strong heart is the basic foundation.
He had it in him: the heart of a champion;
A heart full of compassion and love,
with a touch of courage and strength
and a gift of power from the heavens above.

He performed at his best like a human hurricane;
he destroyed every pugilist whom he faced in the ring.
He became a full pledged boxing champion
at just the age of seventeen.
He is thirty years old now but nothing has changed much;
He still has the same beliefs and the will to survive.
Love by all, young and old alike
in the world of pugilism which he had revived.

    Your poetry is inspiring me to try a poem longer than haiku!
