The Hedonism of Nip/Tuck

Jesse Lee
I have never been a serial television watcher. Despite my obsessive nature and love for TV, there has never been a television show that captures my attention enough to warrant repeat visits.

Until now! There is no other show out there quite like FX's hit drama Nip/Tuck.I was not 'raised' a fan of Fox's sadistic plastic surgery drama. Hell, I was 'born again'!! When I first saw previews for the show, I had no inclination to watch it. With all the medical jargon and grotesque surgery scenes, I figured the television gods were simply trying to bank on our societies obsession with plastic surgery and gore.

It was not until a close friend gave me the first two seasons on DVD for X- Mas when I fully understood the appeal.

Nip/Tuck is a very simple concept. Two doctors, surgeons at McNamara/Troy, played respectfully by Dylan Walsh & Julian McMahon. With copious amounts of money at their disposal, entertainment ensues. Sex, drugs, murder, porn, transvestites and lesbians. It's all there!

One a family man and the other a lothario, Sean McNamara (Walsh) and Christian Troy (McMahon) are polar opposites. With an astounding cast that includes two of the sexiest women on television, Joely Richardson and Kelly Carlson, every character is well rounded and engrossing. Roma Maffia, who skillfully plays the offices anesthesiologist Liz, keeps the doctors grounded with her dry humor and wry insights.

The first two seasons were the most engrossing and entertaining character studies I had ever seen on television; encompassing family members, patients, drug dealers and even porn stars.

When season three came out on DVD a few months ago, I ran to the store. I sat for fifteen hours straight watching it in it's entirety, my ass stapled to the couch. I am embarrassed to admit that day will go down as one of the most memorable days of my life thus far!

Nip/Tuck is definitely a program for adults. When the TV rating comes on the screen flashing TVPG, LSV (language, sex and violence), I get all excited with childish glee. I respect the show for it's unabashed attitude, pushing the limits of free speech. Despite protests and conservative right wing fanatics, Nip/Tuck remains a guilty pleasure for millions of viewers just like me.

Season four, which concludes next Tuesday December 12th , has been the first season which I have had to wait to watch! The anticipation is excruciating, waiting week after week, with every episode ending in a cliff hanger!

For those of you who have not seen an episode, set aside an hour next week. I won't waste any one's time with plot summaries or character bios. Nip/Tuck is a top rate drama that deserves at least one visit. I guarantee you will be intrigued, engrossed, aroused, disgusted or at least amused. If I'm lying, then break my nose and I'll know exactly where to go to get it fixed!
