The Hideaway Diner is the perfect name for this restaurant in Charleston, Tennessee. I had heard about it, but it wasn't until recently that I happened to be in Charleston and found it. They don't call it the Hideaway Diner for nothing! There is a rather large sign on the Highway 11 in Charleston for the diner but you cannot see the place from the road. Once you go up their long driveway, you will find it tucked away in the woods. The parking area is small, but it works out ok because the restaurant isn't very big.

The restaurant does have a website, but it seems like they actually have more items listed on their menu than they do on the website. I would recommend calling them regarding their specials before you go.

We got there about 3:00 pm and we were the only customers. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Now don't get too excited. The decor is, to put it mildly, Dollar Store-ish. The place needs some updating, a lot of updating actually. Some of the mini-blinds need to be replaced. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and we stayed.

My husband ordered their pulled smoked pork dinner. He chose fries and cole slaw as his two sides. I ordered the large rib eye steak, they have two sizes. I chose home made red skin mashed potatoes and sliced tomatoes as my two sides. Both dinners and two drinks came to a total of $29.52, before tip.

The wait was a little long, but we were in no hurry. It turned out the wait was well worth it. The food was absolutely the opposite of the d©cor. My husband declared the pork was the best he has ever eaten. They serve it with their home made sauce. The fries were hot and crispy and the cole slaw was tasty.

My steak was cooked exactly as I requested. The mashed potatoes were excellent. I am a mashed potato fan and if a restaurant uses 'fake' mashed potatoes I won't go back. These potatoes had lumps and pieces of the red skin! The sliced tomatoes were locally grown and delicious.

They serve a slice of garlic bread with their dinners, or you can ask for buttered toast instead. They are very accommodating and the waitress and the owner both went out of their way to make sure we got what we wanted.

There dinners are reasonably priced. A ham dinner with two sides is $6.95, or a country fried steak with gravy and two sides is $7.95. If you would like additional side dishes, they are $1.75 each and include apple sauce, cole slaw, green beans, mashed potatoes, home fries, french fries and several others.

Hot sandwiches run from $3.75 for a hot dog and chips, to $4.95 for grilled pork tenderloin and chips for $4.95. They have appetizers, desserts and they have a menu for the kids.

They do have a very limited soup and salad bar also. They serve breakfast all day and the Belgium waffles sound like something I'll try the next time! Yes, we plan to go back.

If you are looking for good food, cooked the way you like it, then you should consider the Hideaway Diner.

This is exactly the kind of place I look for when we're away. Hey, maybe you should send the Guy Fieri "Triple D" ("Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives") here. I absolutely love that "guy."

My son accused me of cooking instant potatoes once. I made the potatoes so smoothe and completely free of lumps until he just did not believe they were made from scratch. I later had to demonstrate to him how I made the from scratch potatoes where they were like instant.

    Sounds ok. I wouldn't pay $3.75 for a hotdog.
