The High Cost of Eating

V. L. Hamlin
We all saw it coming. We have complained to our friends and our families about how much food prices have risen in the past few years. Yet, what are we doing to change it? Are we really helping our families by complaining about money every day? No! The answer is simply no; there is no way around it. Complaining is not going to cut the grocery bill, nor is it going to change the price of food.

Quite honestly, the cost of food is killing us. Americans are spending hundreds of dollars at the grocery store every week. Food budgets are as large as mortgages and the little man is slowly going under simply trying to feed his family.

It is time to step up, be more responsible with our money and make a bigger effort to change things for ourselves instead of complaining. We are not going to change the price of food, only the manufacturer can do that and I guarantee the number will go up, not down. However, we can change how much we spend on food for our families and it is time to start paying attention.

Plan a Menu

Planning a menu is significant to saving money on groceries. When you know what you are eating each week, it is much easier to shop for ingredients. It is not necessary to plan an extensive menu. It is not even important to plan the days you are eating each meal. Just write down a list of meals your family enjoys. Break the meals into groups of five or seven, depending on how many days in a week you cook at home. At the beginning of each week, pull out your recipes groups and choose one. Make a grocery list based on the meals you choose and go shopping. Each night, pick a meal from your lists, pull out the necessary ingredients and start cooking.

Shop for Sales

Check your local grocery store sales circular every week. This is where you will save the most money. Plan your menu around the items on sale for extra savings.

Use Coupons

You do not have to go out and start extreme couponing to save money, but using coupons will save your money on your grocery bill. It is not necessary to spend hours clipping coupons or searching for sales either. Sit down on Sunday morning and pull out the coupon inserts from the paper. Cut out the coupons for the products you regularly use and recycle the rest. Browse through the sales circular and match your coupons to the sales and the ingredients needed to complete your menu plan.

The high cost of eating is breaking budgets throughout America; don't let yours be one of them. Take the time to better plan your grocery spending, you and your family will be grateful for the savings.
