The High School Coach I am most Grateful For

Randy Inman
I am grateful for Coach Randy Faucette for making an impact on my life. It is possible Coach Faucette even saved my life. Coach Faucette was my high school football coach at Bunker Hill, in North Carolina.

I am grateful for Coach Faucette refusing to let me play football my senior year. I am and was a big guy and have battled high blood pressure. When a high school football player collapsed and died during a football practice in our state, Coach Faucette became concerned about my health.

I did pass my physical but it was close and I am grateful that Coach Faucette decided to use caution and not let me play. I was in terrible shape and to be honest not a very good player anyway. If three players at my position, two guys from the band and a cheerleader all got hurt I would have gotten into a game! Well that was an exaggeration but I was bad.

I am grateful that in my junior year Coach Faucette did let me play on special teams during one game. It was nice that my parents got to see me play with more than 30 seconds left on the clock. Of course I got hit the hardest by one of my own teammates who took the instructions hit anything in front of you to heart! They should have told him not to hit people in the same color uniform as him.

I am especially grateful for my high school football coach letting me be the head equipment manager for the team. I still was around the team and didn't have to do all that running which possibly would have risked my life.

When during the first pep rally I didn't go out with the team because I felt like I didn't belong. Several senior football players came off the gym floor and got me and made me go out with them. They have all forgotten that I am sure, but I never will and it's my favorite high school memory. Coach Faucette made that possible. Thanks Coach!

What an awesome tribute. Thank God you had a coach that was realistic instead of some frustrated super-jock who convinced you to play in spite of your condition. Kudos!
