The Hills Comes to an End

T. S. Jones
Once upon a time, in the city of Laguna Beach, California there lived a young girl named Lauren Conrad. Lauren lived in a modest ocean view home with her family and was full of ambition and craved independence; she ventured off to the Art University in San Francisco. She would discover it wasn't her path to walk down and decided to come home and regroup while taking courses locally. Still wanting to spread her wings, Lauren tried again at gaining her by enrolling at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) in Los Angeles and secured an internship at Teen Vogue. Her move to the City of Angels wasn't a solo one; her then best friend Heidi Montag joined her. They had ambitions of starting a new life and have careers in fashion. However after one day of classes, Heidi decided school wasn't for her (she claims wit wasn't challenging). One night whiled out with Lauren and new friend Audrina, she had a chance meeting with Brent Bolthouse and got a job working in his PR firm. As time went by the BFF's began to drift apart once Heidi's new boyfriend Spencer began to monopolize her time causing her to change plans she had with Lauren at the last minute and go to out with him. She eventually moved in with Spencer and Audrina moved in with Lauren.

Fast forward to season 5 - Lauren's departure, Heidi's wedding and the arrival of Lauren's Laguna Beach frienemy Kristin Cavallari...

The end of the first half of season five was Heidi's wedding and hoping that Lauren would be there to see her get married. After some soul searching (and a talk with the producers) Lauren decided to be there for Heidi at a very important moment in her life. What no one expected (except Heidi, her sister and Spencer) was the arrival of Kristin Cavallari; she introduced Heidi to Spencer. So after the nuptials, Lauren exited church left and Kristin exits out and has small talk with the girls. Thus closing one chapter with Lauren and opening a new one with Kristin. But it wasn't as smooth a transition as some would hope; Kristin came in like a serious earthquake.

Kristin had an on and off thing with Justin and stayed true to herself and didn't compromise for anyone. She became friends with Stacie the Bartender (which could possibly question her friendship to Heidi since Spencer is all about loyalty). And without any effort of her own, she intimidated Brody's girlfriend Jayde to the point that they ended the relationship. Side note:Jayde was too out there for Brody anyway. Brody has too much sense to deal with someone as unstable as Jayde.

At the start of season six Kristen and the crew went to Miami for the Super Bowl and did what they did naturally - party! There was a sour moment when Kristin saw Audrina and Brody getting chummy so she decided to go her own way and hang out with Stacie and a few other people instead of hanging out with Lo, Stephanie and Audrina. They felt that Kristin was going overboard with the partying and drinking; and the alleged rumor that she's been taking drugs. The thing that this writer can't understand is that this is the weekend and there was no need to worry about working or anything serious. It was the Super Bowl weekend, a lot of people partied hard and had wild times. That doesn't always mean that drugs are involved (there have been some reports of Kristin being seen taking a line of cocaine at a party in L.A.).

This season has also shed light on Heidi's new look from her multiple surgeries - in case you missed the laundry list of her one day procedures:

1. Mini brow lift

2. Botox in the forehead and frown area

3. Nose job revision

4. Fat injections in the cheeks, nasolabial folds and lips

5. Chin reduction

6. Neck liposuction

7. Ears pinned back

8. Breast augmentation revision

9. Liposuction on waist, hips and inner and outer thighs

10. Butt augmentation*

One can imagine why someone would go to such extremes at the age of 23. Could it be low self esteem? The superficial need to keep up with what she thinks is beauty in L.A.? Or is it both? Her mother was visibly heartbroken at the new look her daughter acquired and lets her know what so many other people thought - she looked better before the surgery.

Those were just pieces of the season premier and it's expected to get better. Adam DiVello felt that "we've told the story of struggle and of finding yourself in L.A." Struggling....really? Well I guess if you're going to leave the mean streets of Laguna Beach and move to Los Angeles then there is some struggling involved - not!! Finding yourself yes but not struggling. This was a show that became a vehicle for some to venture off to successful careers (Lauren becoming a fashion designer and NY Times Bestselling author, Audrina becoming an actress and Whitney having her own show and fashion line) and for others a animalistic addiction to fame (Spencer and Heidi - no explanation needed). The time for this show to end was long overdue; most felt that the show should have ended when Lauren left - so did the rating system. They claim the series finale will be on a high note - we'll just have to wait and see.

The final season of The Hills airs on Tuesdays at 10pm on MTV.

I've been writing about the entertainment world for some time now. I enjoy the aspects of it, the ins and outs, and some of the drama is like a great reality show. My wish is to write for a few magazines and...  View profile
