Call me crazy, but I liked MTV's "The Hills." I don't know if it was the fashion, or the music or the Lauren Conradness of it all, but I got sucked in to the MTV reality soap every week until it ended -- in a rather shocking way-- one year ago.
In case you need a refresher, "The Hills" 2010 finale made us question if the show was real or totally scripted. It was like the episode of "Dallas' where we suddenly realized the whole season was a dream. Yes, it was that bad.
As for the realness of "The Hills," I'm going to go with that it was somewhere in between.
I'm thinking it started out-- actually way back in the "Laguna Beach" days-- as a true attempt at filming these kids' real lives. But real life is boring. Somewhere along the line, these untrained high schoolers become bona fide actors. Well, as much as they could. Let's call it semi-scripted reality.
"Hills' star Lauren Conrad has already gone on record to say that one of her filmed phone conversations with arch nemesis Spencer Pratt was a do-over. And the series finale-which featured Brody Jenner suddenly on a soundstage -- definitely made us think that someone had pulled the wool over our eyes.
But now comes buzz that producers were actually tinkering with making "The Hills" into a movie. Would this mean extended footage at Les Deux? More scenes of Justin Bobby burping and not being able to commit?
The saddest thing about "The Hills" is how it ended. For me, it ended when Conrad walked off into the sunset after Heidi and Spencer's wedding. It was her last hurrah-- she was going off to make something of herself in the fashion world (and she did-- have you seen her Kohl's clothing line?)
Kristin Cavallari stepped in to fill her Louboutins but it was never enough. The show tried to go back to its "Laguna" roots with all the cattiness, but since these kids were now in their twenties it just wasn't cute anymore.
So how exactly would this bunch fill two hours of prime movie time? The "Sex and the City" girls could barely do it-- and they went out on a high note.
"The Hills" The Movie? I'd rather run for the hills.
