Alwar is located at around 100 miles away from Delhi. It is enclosed by many forests and the Mountains range of Arvalli all around it. The natural beauty of this area is the most eyes catching during the rainy season in particular. There are also many varieties of the birds in the forests near the city of Alwar. Alwar was the oldest state of Rajasthan and was ruled by the Matsya rulers. The ancient city of Virat, presently known as Vairat is situated around 40 miles away from the city of Alwar. This was the city where the Pandava brothers stayed during their hidden stay in the forest for the last one year. This was the reason why Matsya rulers supported Pandavas in the Mahabharata war. Alwar is well connected by trains from Delhi. The luxury trains like Shatabdi Express, Marudhar Express, and Mandor Express pass through Alwar. It may not be very convenient to reach Alwar by air as the nearest airport of Delhi is around 100 miles away.
The most vital place for the tourists at Alwar is the city palace. This palace is very old and presents marvelous ancient architecture of red stones. There are around 75 rooms in this palace. Though, only 14 rooms are shown presently to all the tourists. There are government offices in some of the rooms of the palace. The famous museum in this palace is really worth seeing as it is having many rare species of the ancient times. The ammunitions used during the wars by the kings of Alwar, in the past are also stored at this museum. The museum remains open from 10 am to 5 pm every day and the entrée is free of cost. There is a large Lake opposite to the palace having boating facility in motor boats and peddle boats. There are some ancient temples of Lord Shiva on the bank of this Lake. The next place to be visited is Bada Kila. This fort is located on a very large rock at the height of 1000 feet. The view of the entire city of Alwar is really breathtaking from the top of this fort. The queen's umbrella is the place where the queen had burnt herself alive after the death of his king husband and is visited by all the tourists.
The forest reserve of Sariska is situated at around 25 miles away from the city of Alwar. Many wild animals and rare birds can be seen in this forest reserve. If you are lucky, you may also be able to view the tiger in the Sariska tiger reserve. There are the ancient temples of Lord Buddha, Lord Hanuman, and Nilkanth Mahadev in this forest reserve. Alwar is the peaceful and silent city without any city hassles and the tensions. There are some good hotels available like Hotel Alwar, Hotel Mayur, Hotel Minal, and Hotel Sarika Palace. The best hotel out of all these hotels is Hotel Sarika Palace in which we had resided in the year 2006 during our visit to Alwar. The hotel offers more than three star amenities and is having a very nice restaurant, famous mainly for Rajasthani food delicacies like dalbati and churma. You may need to stay at this silent peaceful city for around 2 days to see all the tourist spots.
Though, Alwar is not among the famous and well known tourist places as many others, it surely provides excellent outing to all the tourists to experience the traditional Rajasthani style of living and also to view some of the historical monuments of this oldest state of Rajasthan.
