The History of Post-It Notes

Bandit
Everyone knows what Post-it notes are: They are those great little pieces of paper with the self-stick backing. We all love Post-it Notes and we use them everyday. We love our Post-It Notes. But there is one thing about these little pieces of paper that many are not aware of. These tiny squares of paper were invented by accident. Post-It Notes is manufactured by 3M Company and is now considered to be one of the most popular office products that are used.

A Post-it note is a square, canary yellow piece of paper that is 76 mm in size and each one has a strip of non-abrasive adhesive on the back. Post-It notes were designed for temporarily attaching a note to important documents, walls, desks, computer displays and wherever else you might need a reminder. Post-It Notes come in a variety of sizes, shapes and vividly bright neon colors. They are often referred to as sticky notes.

Post-It Notes were not something that had been planned even be invented. In 1968 a man named Dr. Spencer Silver and fellow scientist and friend, Jesse Kops came up with a pressure sensitive adhesive that had a very weak stickiness to it. For the next five years, Dr. Silver presented his invention to others working at 3M research laboratories, and even though he did not have any takers, Dr. Silver did not discard the sticky goo. In 1970, Art Fry had attended one of Dr. Silver's seminars and had an idea on how he could use the adhesive. He wanted to use the adhesive to anchor his bookmark in his hymnbook because they would always just fall right back out. Mr. Fry applied a thin layer of the adhesive to the back of his bookmarkers and they stayed in place and would lift off very easily without leavng any sticky residue on the hymnbook. In 1977, 3M decided to launch the product but had little success because consumers had not purchased the product to even try it out. A year later in 1978, 3M decided to send out free samples to Boise, Idaho residents and after a large portion of the people who had received a free sample said that they would purchase this product to use, Post-It Notes popularity skyrocketed and then began being sold throughtout the world.

yeah, post-it notes are in the same league as paper towels for me, now. But I can live without the neon colored ones - they bleed!
